If you are interested in joining the team, submit your application for a Deputy Sheriff position.TYPICAL RESPONSIBILITIES:* On an assigned shift, operates a patrol car to observe violations of laws, suspicious activities or persons and disturbances of law and order.* Responds to radio dispatches and answers calls and complaints.* Serves warrants, summons, subpoenas, capiases, court orders, notices, attachments, claims and deliveries, ejections, executions, and other legal papers, makes arrests.* Testifies in court.* Assists in domestic disputes.* Directs traffic for funerals and other public gatherings.* Assists other law enforcement officers in investigations.* Serves as court bailiff and prisoner guard.* Reports unsafe conditions existing in the street or other public facilities.* Assists with criminal investigations by presenting evidence, interviewing victims and witnesses, prepares property and evidence, recording and issuing of evidence in court cases.* Transport prisoners, mental patients and others as required.* Performs Bailiff and court security duties as assigned.* Prepares detailed reports.* Performs related tasks as required.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES* General knowledge of police methods, practices, and procedures.* General knowledge of the geography of the County and location of important buildings* Thorough knowledge of the rules and regulations of the Sheriff's Department.* Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and to prepare clear comprehensive reports.* Ability to deal courteously but firmly with the public.* Ability to analyze situations and to adopt quick, effective, and reasonable courses of action with due regard to surrounding hazards and circumstances.* Ability to develop skills in the use of firearms and the operation of motor vehicles.* Ability to maintain physical agility and endurance.REQUIREMENTS:* Most have a current NC Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) Certification.* Must have or be able to obtain a North Carolina driver's license.* Must not have been convicted of a felony or serious misdemeanor.Special Requirements:Must be able to work 12-hour rotating shifts, which includes holidays and weekends.Durham County Government is an Equal Opportunity Employer
