    PRIMARY PURPOSE:
    Serves under the general supervision of the shift Sergeant, assist with the guidance and directing of sworn peace officers and other non-sworn personnel of the District Police Department. Corporals serve as a first-line Officer with leadership responsibilities. Perform supervisory duties in the absence of the shift Sergeant. Provides work leadership, guidance and training to police officers in the field and performs specialized duties, tasks as assigned. Performs all Police Officer patrol duties as needed.
    QUALIFICATIONS:
    Education/Certification:
    • Possession of valid Texas Driver's License with a good driving record
    • High school diploma or GED
    • Possession of TCOLE Peace Officer Certification
    • Applicant must pass an extensive criminal background investigation
    • Applicant may be required to successfully complete a polygraph exam, physical exam,
    • drug screen, and psychological exam
    Special Knowledge/Skills:
    • Demonstrated experience or knowledge of the criminal investigation process
    • Demonstrated experience or knowledge of the rules and procedures of criminal evidence handling and security
    • Ability to interpret policy, written directives, and applicable statutory laws and rules, and case law to insure proper application and compliance by direct reports
    • Ability to effectively supervise a large detail of sworn officers and security officers in the implementation of operational plans for response to safety, security, and traffic management needs of large scale events
    • Demonstrated experience or knowledge of proper allocation of personnel and resources in response to changing workload needs
    • Effective verbal and written communication skills
    Experience:
    • Preferred minimum of three (3) continuous years of sworn law enforcement experience
    • Minimum of two (2) years of experience as a Patrol Officer in Field Operations/Patrol Division
    • Associates degree from an accredited university in criminal justice (or related liberal arts field), education, or business may substitute for above preferred experience
    • Successful completion of TCOLE Course 3702-Field Training Officer
    • Successful completion of TCOLE Course 1014-Basic Instructor
    MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
    Supervisory Responsibilities
    1. Directly supervise assigned sworn personnel; approximately five (5) to seven (7) sworn peace officers
    2. Indirectly supervise assigned non-sworn personnel; public safety officers and Crossing Guards
    3. Offer guidance, direction, and support to sworn personnel on calls for service and assist with answering calls for service and initial investigations as needed
    4. Ensure quality control/assurance of all work conducted by direct reports
    5. Evaluate/appraise job performance of employees to ensure effectiveness
    6. Ensure strict adherence to standards in the areas of attendance, performance, and conduct of department personnel
    7. Assist with the development, implementation, and administration of corrective action or improvement plans to ensure exemplary safety and security operations
    Personnel Management
    1. Develop, communicate, and implement sound recommendations relative to scheduling, placement, assignment, retention, commendation, discipline, and dismissal of department personnel
    2. Assist with recruiting, training/professional development of department personnel
    Law, Policy, and Reports
    1. Implement and ensures compliance with laws and regulations established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rule, and local board policy in the area of safety and security
    2. Ensure compliance with department/district written directives, policy, and standard operating procedures by all department personnel
    3. Investigate possible deficiencies in the areas of attendance, performance, and conduct on the part of department personnel
    4. Develop and present reports related to crime stats, employee work performance, and department response to issues of safety and security in the district
    Community Relations
    1. Identify district/department/community needs related to campus/district safety and security, and develop, coordinate, implement, and support activities that address those identified needs
    2. Collaborate with district staff, principals, and assistant principals to coordinate department response to concerns of safety and security on campuses
    3. Serve as liaison between campus administration and direct reports and department administrative personnel
    4. Collaborate with parents, community members, law enforcement agencies, governmental agencies, social service agencies/organizations, to coordinate efforts to address concerns of safety and security within the district
    Miscellaneous Responsibilities
    1. Assist with investigation of criminal offenses and may carry a caseload in support of the criminal investigations detective
    2. Perform other duties as assigned by Chief of Police or his/her designee

    • Work with frequent interruptions
    Physical Demands
    • Light lifting and carrying, reaching above shoulder, use of fingers, repetitive hand motions; frequent bending and stooping
    • Constantly sits, sees, speaks, drives, writes by hand
    • Frequently stands, walks, kneels, crouches, squats, twists body
    • Infrequently crawls, climbs, runs, fights and wrestles, lifts light to heavy objects
    • Prolonged use of computer and keyboards
    Environmental Demands
    • Normal office environment
    • May work prolonged or irregular hours
    • Exposure to outside environment to include heat, cold, and inclement weather
