    University Police Officer I (Evergreen) (Open)

    Under direct supervision, participates in formal and on-the-job training programs to achieve and maintain Maryland Police Training Commission and institutional requirements. Patrols areas of Salisbury University. Prevents and detects the commission of crimes, directs traffic, and enforces state and local laws. Performs other related duties as prescribed in the job classification of a UPO I.

    This position reports directly to a shift sergeant and has no supervisory responsibilities.

    Required/Minimum Qualifications
    • Finalists will be required to successfully complete a comprehensive background investigation, including a drug screening, Voice Stress Analysis (VSA), and psychological evaluation.
    • Candidates must demonstrate the ability to meet all applicable training, certification, and compliance requirements associated with the position.
    • Candidates must exhibit strong judgment, integrity, and professionalism in accordance with departmental and institutional standards
    • Must be 21 years of age upon graduation from the Police Academy.
    • Must be a citizen of the United States; or a permanent legal resident of the United States who is an honorably discharged veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces and has submitted an application for U.S. citizenship that is pending approval
    • Must possess a valid driver's license.
    • Must have a high school diploma or General Education Development (GED) certificate.
    Preferred Qualifications
    • Working knowledge of citizens' rights and responsibilities.
    • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
    • Ability to operate two-way radios and telephones in a variety of environments.
    • Ability to demonstrate sensitivity and professionalism when interacting with a diverse population.
    • Ability to maintain composure and exercise appropriate judgment, professionalism, and restraint at all times.
    • Ability to comprehend and apply laws, ordinances, rules, and regulations.
    • Ability to sit, drive, stand, walk, climb, and run for sustained periods of time.
    • Ability to lift, drag, and carry heavy objects.
    • Ability to recognize and respond to situations that may jeopardize public safety.
    • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
    • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
    • Ability to respond physically to emergency situations requiring stamina and the use of force.
    • Ability to enter and exit vehicles frequently and rapidly.
    • Ability to safely operate emergency vehicles.

    The position is a full-time, non-exempt state role with comprehensive benefits.
