    Under general direction, to perform responsible law enforcement and crime prevention work by patrolling assigned areas and answering calls and complaints; to investigate incidents and crimes; to make physical arrests; and to perform related work as required.

    Performs patrol on an assigned shift; conducts property checks on businesses and homes for burglary and other criminal activities; stops and questions suspicious persons; assists with a variety of emergencies; issues citations for violations of laws; prepares reports of incidents and investigations; contacts victims, witnesses, complainants, and suspects for detailed interviewing when required; secures statements; may have responsibility for preserving evidence at the scenes of incidents and crimes; follows-up on investigations when assigned; makes arrests of criminals; appears in court proceedings when summoned; books, transports, and has responsibility for the care and safety of detained persons; issues traffic citations and performs traffic control assignments; performs accident investigations; performs a wide range of law enforcement assignments; makes initial and supplementary investigation of crimes in areas such as personal violence, theft, checks, intelligence, juvenile, narcotics, and others; investigates cases involving missing persons, lost children and runaways; collects material evidence and does crime scene work; performs surveillance of persons and places; apprehends, interrogates and arrests suspects; prepares and submits reports; establishes and maintains liaison with other criminal justice agencies.

    • Must have satisfactorily completed a P.O.S.T. approved basic academy or be enrolled. (PROOF REQUIRED AT TIME OF APPLICATION.)
    • At the time of appointment, must possess a P.O.S.T. Basic academy certificate of completion. This certificate is valid for 36 months from the date of academy graduation.
    • Minimum 21 years of age at the time of appointment. No maximum age.
    • High School graduate or GED equivalent.
    • The ability to read and write English fluently is essential.
    • Possess a valid California Class 3 or C driver's license.
    • A United States citizen or permanent resident alien who is eligible for and has applied for citizenship at least one year prior to applying for this position.
    • Weight proportional to height.
    • Hearing and color vision must be normal.
    • Vision must be at least 20/100 uncorrected, corrected to 20/20 in one eye and 20/30 in the weaker eye.
    • Ability to speak and write a second language, while not required, is desirable.
    • A general understanding of the Montebello Police Department policy and procedure is desirable.

    • CalPERS 3% @ 50 or 2.7% @ 57, depending on member status
    • CalPERS Classic member employees pay 12% of member contributions to CalPERS

    • Longevity pay available up to 15%; Lateral Police Officer eligible for Longevity Pay based on Sworn service time. (Completion of: 3 years 2%, 5 years 4%, 10 years 7%, 15 yrs 10%, 20 years 13%, 25 years 15%)
    • 11 medical plans available, including dental & vision coverage. maximum paid by City is $1650/per month towards full family coverage.
    • Or in lieu of coverage, $350 per month medical incentive plan
    • $30,000 term life insurance

    • Starting at 80 hours of Vacation leave annually
    • 30 hours bereavement leave per eligible incident
