    Dispatch Supervisor

    The Dispatch Supervisor oversees and coordinates the daily operations of the Dispatch Center within the Office of Safety & Security for the Atlanta Public Schools Police Department. This position is responsible for supervising dispatch personnel, ensuring efficient and accurate emergency and non-emergency communications, maintaining compliance with applicable laws and standards, and supporting continuous improvement of dispatch operations. Note: This position requires availability to work nights, weekends, and holidays as operational needs dictate.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college and university required
    • Valid State of Georgia Driver's License or proof of equivalent mobility
    • Georgia Crime Information Center (GCIC) and National Crime Information Center (NCIC) Certification (required within 6 months)
    • Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Dispatch Certification (required within 6 months)
    • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification (required within 6 months)
    • Terminal Agency Coordinator Certification (required within 6 months)
    • Communication Instructor Certification (required within 1 year)
    • Minimum of ten (10) years of experience in public safety dispatch and/or 911 emergency communications
    • At least five (5) years of lead or supervisory experience required
    • Experience in K12 education or public sector preferred

    Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

    • Supervises daily operations of the Dispatch Center, ensuring efficient and effective communications support.
    • Directly supervises assigned staff, including scheduling, assigning work, monitoring performance, and administering discipline as needed.
    • Develops and manages shift schedules to ensure adequate staffing coverage; adjusts schedules as necessary to address operational needs.
    • Monitors call handling, dispatching activities, and radio communications to ensure accuracy, timeliness, and compliance with established protocols.
    • Coordinates and oversees training, including onboarding, certification, and recertification requirements.
    • Ensures compliance with GCIC, NCIC, FBI, and other applicable regulatory standards.
    • Prepares, reviews, and analyzes reports related to dispatch operations, including performance metrics, staffing, and workload trends.
    • Assists with handling high-priority or complex emergency and non-emergency calls as needed.
    • Investigates complaints related to dispatch services and recommends corrective actions.
    • Oversees the maintenance, retention, and security of dispatch records and communications data.
    • Collaborates with internal departments and external public safety agencies to support coordinated emergency response efforts.
    • Promotes a culture of professionalism, accountability, and continuous improvement within the dispatch unit.
    • Maintains regular, punctual attendance and availability for on-site operations.
    • Performs other duties as assigned by leadership.

    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

    • Principles and practices of supervision and personnel management.
    • Public safety communication procedures, protocols, and applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
    • GCIC/NCIC policies and compliance standards.
    • Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulations governing radio communications.
    • Emergency communications systems, including Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD), radio consoles, and related technologies.
    • Geography of the Atlanta metropolitan area, including streets, landmarks, and jurisdictional boundaries.
    • Police, fire, and emergency medical terminology, codes, and service priorities.
    • Strong leadership, team management, and organizational skills.
    • Effective oral and written communication skills.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and dispatch-related software systems.
    • Ability to monitor, evaluate, and ensure accuracy of communications and data entry.
    • Skilled in conflict resolution, decision-making, and problem-solving in high-pressure environments.
    • Ability to supervise, train, evaluate, and motivate staff.
    • Ability to remain calm and make sound decisions in emergencies and high-risk situations.
    • Ability to interpret and enforce policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
    • Ability to analyze operational data and prepare detailed reports.
    • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, public safety partners, and the public.
    • Ability to manage multiple priorities and adapt to rapidly changing situations.
    • Ability to read maps and direct emergency personnel accurately.

    Salary Information:

    Pay Grade: 133

    Work Days: Annual (261-DAY)

    Vision: Ability to read small print and view a computer screen for prolonged periods

    Hearing: Ability to tolerate exposure to noisy conditions

    Speech: Ability to be understood in face-to-face communications, to speak with a level of proficiency and volume to be understood over a telephone or computer

    Upper Body Mobility: Ability to use hands to grasp, and manipulate small objects; manipulate fingers, twist and bend at wrist and elbow; extend arms to reach outward and upward; use hands and arms to lift objects; turn, raise, and lower head

    Strength: Ability to lift, push, pull and/or carry objects which weigh as much as 5 or more pounds on a frequent basis. Incumbent may be required to physically restrain parties involved in a conflict

    Environmental Requirements: Ability to encounter constant work interruptions; work cooperatively with others; work independently; work indoors

    Mental Requirements: Ability to read, write, understand, interpret and apply information at a moderately complex level essential for successful job performance; math skills at a high school proficiency level; judgement and the ability to process information quickly; learn quickly and follow verbal procedures and standards; give verbal instruction; rank tasks in order of importance; copy, compare, compile and coordinate information and records.
