Employees in this class are responsible for ensuring compliance with Rockdale County planning, zoning, licensing and land use standards, codes, rules, and regulations. Code Enforcement Officer I is the entry-level classification. Work includes conducting field inspections and issuing citations as needed. Work is assigned by administrative superior in terms of department goals and objectives. Work is spot-checked and reviewed for accuracy, nature and propriety of final results.

Knowledge of county and department policies and procedures. Knowledge of Rockdale County zoning and land use regulations, rules and procedures. Knowledge of legal, administrative, and procedural regulations applicable to the particular section assigned. Knowledge of geography of the county. Skill in maintaining regulatory records and proper preparation and submission of reports. Skill in reading and interpreting site plans and specifications relating to land use and zoning code provisions. Skill in conflict management in dealing with potentially hostile situations. Skill and ability to remain calm and composed, while using conflict management skill in relation to potentially stressful and/or hostile situations. Skill in basic computer applications for word processing and spreadsheets. Ability to operate modern office equipment. Ability to meet the public and explain zoning and land use codes concisely, tactfully and impartially. Ability to recognize deviations from code requirements or from established policies and procedures. Ability to sit, stand, bend, walk crouch, crawl, and kneel. Ability to occasionally lift heavy objects, climb ladders and use tools that require a moderate degree of dexterity.
Working Conditions The employee generally works in an outdoor environment and may be exposed to hot, cold or inclement weather, rough terrain, dust, dirt, noise and machinery with moving parts. Some work is performed in an office environment with occasional appearances in a courtroom setting.
