  • Summary

    Security Specialist

    Monitors and ensures effective security measures are in place, such as employee access to facilities, building surveillance, and other components of an effective system of building security.

    Major responsibilities and duties include:

    • Guard school building and property and make prescribed rounds of inspection through the day.
    • Patrol school corridors, locker rooms, restrooms, assembly and athletic facilities, gymnasiums, bus loading areas, and other campus locations in order to observe student behavior and prevent violations or unsafe activities.
    • Assist campus administrators with emergency lock-down drills, and review of Campus Emergency Operation Plan (EOP).
    • Work closely with campus and administration officials to develop an attitude sensitive to the need for creating and maintaining a safe and secure environment.
    • Assist staff, police, and emergency personnel in handling emergencies or disruptive situations.
    • Intercept and appropriately handle unauthorized visitors.
    • Notify administrators of any emergency, dangerous situations, or unusual circumstances; to include evidence of substance abuse, child abuse, child neglect, medical conditions, or mental health crises.
    • Demonstrate professional and ethical behavior working with students, parents, school District personnel, and outside agencies associated with the school.
    • Assist in protecting students, staff, and visitors from dangerous threats.
    • Maintain effective and constructive relationships with the campus principals, campus staff, and District staff.
    • Wear District provided uniform.
    • Participate in ongoing training and continuing education.
    • Prepare incident and other miscellaneous reports about crimes against the District property and offenses against District personnel or students as requested.
    • Report and provide information to school administrators and other authorized personnel regarding opportunities for improved campus/community relations.
    • Maintain confidentiality.
    • Compile, maintain, file, and secure all physical and computerized reports, records, and other required documents.
    • Comply with all policies, operating procedures, legal requirements, and verbal and written directives.
    • Follow District safety protocols and emergency procedures.

    Qualifications:

    • High School Diploma or GED or equivalent education
    • Bachelor's degree (preferred)
    • Valid and clear Texas Driver's License
    • Successful related work experience
    • Three (3) years law enforcement, school marshal, military police, or other experience as commissioned peace officer (preferred)

    Special knowledge/skills/abilities:

    • Ability to pass random drug screenings.
    • Ability to pass criminal background check.
    • Ability to meet physical demands of the position.
    • Ability to participate and meet demands of ongoing training requirements specific to school district safety.
    • Ability to de-escalate situations when possible
    • Ability to keep calm under stressful conditions
    • Ability to effectively communicate written and verbal communication, able to produce acceptable written reports.
    • Ability to make sound judgments and reasonable decisions under duress.
    • Knowledge of NIMS and FEMA protocols
    • Knowledge of Standard Response Protocol (preferred)
    • Knowledge of physical security practices.
    • Knowledge of state and federal rules, regulations, or requirements pertaining to security and safety in public facilities.
    • Proficient in security camera software and computer skills (Excel, Word, Outlook, Report writing)
    • Strong observational skills, fact-gathering, and investigative skills.
    • Able to maintain confidentiality.

    Mental/physical demands and environmental factors:

    • Tools/Equipment Used: District vehicle, security equipment, two-way radio, alarm system and other security equipment, fire extinguisher; Standard office equipment including personal computer and peripherals
    • Posture: Prolonged standing and sitting; occasional bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting
    • Motion: Strenuous walking and climbing; frequent keyboarding/mouse, prolonged driving
    • Lifting: Frequent moderate lifting and carrying (1544 pounds)
    • Environment: Work outside and inside, on slippery or uneven walking surfaces; frequent exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures, dust, noise, vibration; exposure to electrical hazards; work around moving objects or vehicles; work alone; may work irregular hours; occasional prolonged hours; frequent districtwide travel.
