    Within the County organization, the Sheriff's Office is responsible for protecting public safety, maintaining order, and providing essential law enforcement services to residents and visitors. The department is committed to fair, consistent, and transparent practices, and works in partnership with the community to address concerns, solve problems, and enhance the overall safety and well-being of Door County.

    To continue this important work, we are seeking a candidate who will perform the responsibilities outlined in the job summary and contribute to our efforts in serving the community.

    Job Summary

    Under general supervision, this position supports law enforcement operations by performing security, patrol, and community service duties. The Sworn Reserve Deputy aids in enforcing laws, maintaining public safety, and supporting full-time deputies across various assignments and special functions.

    Essential Duties & Responsibilities
    1. Provides security at public functions and directs traffic at major events to ensure public safety.
    2. Transports prisoners securely between facilities and supervises their custody when required.
    3. Conducts marine or snowmobile patrols depending on seasonal needs and assignments.
    4. Supplements full-time deputies in law enforcement activities as directed by supervisory staff.
    5. Performs patrol duties in assigned areas including traffic control, accident response, and criminal investigation.
    6. Maintains radio and telephone contact with supervisors to coordinate activities and obtain guidance.
    7. Assists citizens with issues such as vehicle lockouts, traffic safety concerns, and crime prevention education.
    8. Responds to emergencies, including civil disturbances and accidents, and takes appropriate law enforcement action.
    9. Interrogates suspects and witnesses, preserves evidence, and prepares reports to support legal processes.
    10. Executes civil process services as required by departmental and legal directives.
    11. Completes detailed documentation and official reports pertaining to law enforcement and public safety activities.

    Key Competencies & Skills
    • Critical Thinking: Applies legal and procedural knowledge to respond to dynamic field situations.
    • Communication: Interacts professionally with the public and colleagues; prepares accurate and concise reports.
    • Problem Solving: Acts swiftly in emergencies; uses judgment to determine appropriate enforcement actions.
    • Collaboration: Works closely with other deputies and departments to maintain order and public safety.
    • Technical Proficiency: Operates patrol vehicles, radios, weapons, and other law enforcement equipment effectively.
    Required Education & Experience
    • At least 18 years of age
    • Valid driver's license
    • Minimum of sixty (60) college credits in police science, criminal justice or related field.
    • Certification as a Wisconsin Law Enforcement Officer, or eligibility for certification within 12 months of hire.
    • Completion of the Sworn Reserve Deputy Field Training Officer (FTO) program.
    Preferred Education & Experience
    • Previous experience in law enforcement, security, or public safety roles.
    • Training or experience with community-oriented policing initiatives.
    Physical & Work Environment Requirements

    The position requires frequent sitting, auditory and verbal communication. Occasional standing, walking, lifting (up to 60 pounds), reaching, climbing, kneeling, and crawling are required. Work involves exposure to various weather conditions and potential physical hazards. The role demands mental alertness, physical agility, and the ability to rapidly respond to emergencies and threats.

    Emergency Response Statement

    In an effort to provide for continuity of County government and to cope with the problems of the emergency, you may be required to work during a proclaimed state of emergency, consistent with Sec. 323.14, Wis. Stats. and County emergency management plans and programs.
