Firefighter
Key duties and responsibilities
- Fire suppression:
- Constructing fire lines by clearing brush and felling trees with hand tools like an axe or chainsaw.
- Using pumps, hoses, and other equipment to apply water, foam, or retardant.
- Patrolling fire lines to extinguish sparks, flare-ups, and hot spots.
- Fire management and prevention:
- Planning and executing prescribed burns to manage fuel.
- Participating in fuels management and hazard reduction activities.
- Educating the public on fire prevention and safety.
- Equipment and maintenance:
- Operating and maintaining firefighting equipment, including chainsaws, pumps, and engines.
- Cleaning, reconditioning, and storing tools and equipment after use.
Full Time employees will have the availability to: Blue Cross Blue Shield of NC Community Eye Care Dental Insurance — Ameritas Vacation and Sick Time earning Being an employee of Swain County (Local Government) it is mandatory for Full Time employees to contribute to North Carolina Retirement which the County matches after 5 years vested with the County.
