    Firefighter/Paramedic

    Under the general direction of the assigned Captain, the Firefighter/Paramedic position provides basic and/or advanced life support and firefighting work in the treatment of the sick or injured and firefighting duties in preventing, combating, and extinguishing fires along with other rescue related duties as necessary. Additionally the position is expected to learn and understand equipment maintenance and safety techniques to ensure safe and effective operations for the department.

    Essential duties and responsibilities include:

    • Perform basic firefighting operations including but not limited to; respond to fire alarms; drive fire apparatus, ambulance and other auxiliary equipment; lay and connect hose; hold nozzles and directs fog or water streams; raise and climb ladders; use fire extinguishers, bars, hooks, lines and other equipment.
    • Ventilate burning buildings by opening windows, cutting holes in roofs/floors, or mechanical means. Perform salvage operations such as throwing salvage covers, sweeping water, and removing debris.
    • Respond to motor vehicle accidents, aircraft accidents and other incidents whereby extrication must be performed using hand and high pressure hydraulic tools.
    • Respond to medical emergencies; provides treatment for patients using basic and advanced life support.
    • Transport the sick and injured to appropriate medical facilities while continuing medical care enroute.
    • Perform general maintenance work in the upkeep of fire department property: cleans and polishes floors, cleans restrooms and other public and firefighter access areas, mows and edges yard; tends flower beds, repairs property and equipment; washes, cleans, polishes fire apparatus.
    • Memorize district and facilities, streets, hydrants, sprinkler connections, and Fire Department Key boxes.
    • Conduct public education programs, fire inspections, and pre-fire planning activities.
    • Participate in physical fitness exercises and maintain required fitness as defined by department policy
    • Maintain high standard of professional appearance, attitude, and customer service at all times.
    • Answer and forward incoming phone calls.
    • Greet and assist public in matters appropriate to the position, or refer to a supervisor.
    • Prepare and submits reports as directed.
    • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
    • Regular, reliable, and punctual attendance is required.

    Required knowledge, skills and abilities include:

    • The procedures and methods used in safely and comfortably handling/treating patients.
    • Pre-hospital patient-care for advanced and basic life support.
    • Fire suppression and prevention methods, procedures and techniques.
    • Principles and practices of disaster preparedness, response, and recovery.
    • Current safety practices and procedures involved in the fire service.
    • Office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers and applicable software applications.
    • Pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations.

    Ability to:

    • Learn how to use and safely operate firefighting equipment.
    • Communicate both orally and in writing, and be able to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
    • Ability to think clearly and use independent judgment in routine and any occurring non-routine situations.
    • Perform competently in dynamic, highly stressful situations
    • Work extended hours and days to meet operational needs.
    • Interpret and apply applicable federal, state, and local policies, laws, and regulations and City Policy.
    • Operate modern office equipment and computers including applicable software applications.
    • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

    Minimum qualifications include:

    • High School diploma or GED equivalent.
    • Minimum of 18 years of age.
    • Valid Class B Exempt driver's license, or the ability to obtain within two months of start date, and the ability to maintain a safe driving record throughout employment as defined by City policy.
    • Basic Structural Firefighter certification from the Texas Commission on Fire Protection. Previous firefighting experience preferred.
    • EMT-Paramedic certification from the Texas Department of State Health Services.
    • Must be able to complete a Personal History Statement, and pass pre-employment screening and background investigation.

    Work environment includes:

    Works in emergency conditions that may involve extreme danger and exertion under hazardous conditions to include but not limited to flames, smoke, hazardous materials, cramped conditions, charged or oxygen deficient atmospheres, downed power lines, victims with severe injuries/death and inclement weather. Employee will generally be assigned to rotating shifts, consisting of 24 hours on duty followed by 48 hours off duty. Some assignments of day shifts, consisting of 40 hour workweeks, typically eight hours per day, may be required.

    Physical requirements include:

    Must be able to wear all assigned bunker gear and perform related emergency scene duties effectively and efficiently. Be able to frequently lift and carry heavy weights, climb, walk, run, drive vehicles, crawl, stoop, push, pull, jump, grasp hoses, grasp and manipulate small objects, work on unsteady footing and use other emergency and firefighting equipment as required.

    Vision and hearing requirements include:

    See in the normal visual range with or without correction; vision sufficient to read computer screens and printed documents and to operate equipment. Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.
