Policy Analyst, Conservation Policy

American Progress is seeking a Policy Analyst to join the Conservation Policy team in its Energy and Environment department. The analyst will conduct research and analysis related to public land, ocean, and energy policy and will lead and co-author original reports and other publications. The ideal candidate will be a team player with strong research and writing skills and robust analytical abilities, including experience identifying, maintaining, and quantitatively analyzing diverse datasets. They must also possess attention to detail; a commitment to conservation, addressing climate change, and improving diversity, equity, and inclusion in conservation policy; and a willingness to work on a wide range of policy issues.

• Develop and manage the production and distribution of a variety of written products such as reports, issue briefs, columns, and op-eds that influence the policy debate on key conservation issues.
• Conduct research and analysis on conservation and energy issues.
• Develop methodology and conduct quantitative analysis on conservation and energy issues including through identification, development, and analysis of large data sets.
• Analyze and track pending state and federal legislative proposals, administrative policies, and regulatory changes.
• Elicit and provide feedback on written products for both internal and external partners.
• Engage in rapid response to policy developments as needed, including by drafting articles, fact sheets, memos, and social media posts.
• Collaborate on research and writing projects with other members of the American Progress Energy and Environment department.
• Represent American Progress in issue-based coalitions and external meetings such as with Capitol Hill staff, diverse partners, and media contacts to advance the organization's work.
• Support the development of the Conservation Policy team's strategic plan and work toward achieving the team's objectives.
• Help embody a culture of justice, equity, and inclusion by performing tasks with these values at their core.
• Develop and maintain expertise in assigned areas of responsibility.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements and qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience.
• At least three to five years of professional experience in conservation and/or environmental policy or a related field. Education, internships, activist roles, and volunteer experience may all be taken into account.
• Knowledge of conservation, energy, and/or climate issues and the legislative and administrative policymaking process.
• Strong research skills and experience identifying, interpreting, and extracting data from a variety of information sources and databases.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills with a knack for translating complex information into accessible, compelling narratives tailored to a range of audiences.
• Problem-solving and analytical skills, including designing research methodology and analyzing data and information sources to answer research questions and address gaps in existing policy analysis.
• Strong quantitative and data management skills such as the proven ability to work with large data sets, create and interpret graphs and charts, and ensure data accuracy. Proficiency in Excel is required and experience with GIS, R, Tableau, or other data visualization tools is preferred.
• Ability to independently plan, prioritize, allocate time, balance projects, and coordinate with internal and external partners.
• Ability to independently manage projects from conception to completion.
• Ability to work under and meet deadlines in a team setting.
