    We currently have an exciting opportunity in our Temporary Services department. This position specifically is located in Norfolk, Virginia. We are looking for 10 Fire Preventers..
    Shift : ALL
    Security Clearance: No Clearance

    • ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND PURPOSE (Job Description)
    The Fire Preventer is responsible for maintaining watch over hot work to prevent fires from occurring in accordance with company policies and procedures.
    • POSITION DEMANDS (Education/Training/Experience)
    Fire Watch Training Certification including NAVSEA Standard 009-07 (3.3.1) A minimum of two year's work experience in the ship repair industry. Ability to access US government facilities and US Naval Vessels Ability to work assigned shift Pass a background check and a pre-employment drug screen Able to lift and carry up to 50lbs Ability to wear a respirator Have a working knowledge of Safety Data Sheets, flash points and explosive limits for hazardous material used. Ability to identify hazardous materials and working conditions and apply proper safety precautions and PPE required for each Qualified to work in confined spaces Qualified to wear safety harnesses and work from scaffolds/platforms where drop may be greater than five (5) feet OSHA 10 hour Maritime certification is a plus.
    • PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
    Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds of weight Repetitive or prolonged walking, standing, sitting, kneeling, climbing, bending, balancing, and lifting. Lifting body weight, reaching, handling, pushing/pulling, leaning and seeing (to maintain visual contact with work area), eye/hand/foot coordination. Hearing warning signals, reading and comprehending safety instructions and work planning sequence. Works in all areas of the shipyard and on board ships. . Must be able to maintain general safety awareness and avoid hazards commonly present in employee's work area.
    • WORKING RELATIONSHIPS
    Reports to the Shop Foreman / General Foreman. This position has no direct reports.
    • PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES
    Observes hot work and ensures fires do not start by keeping the area free of flammable materials Extinguishes fires as necessary Cleans ships, piers, dry docks and other working areas using brooms and water hoses. Assures fire extinguishers are operational and within reach. Wears PPE on job site at all times Removes paint and scale from ships metal surfaces Other duties as assigned including general labor
    • ACCOUNTABILITY
    Accountable to the Shop Foreman / General Foreman.
    • STANDARD EQUIPMENT ISSUE
    A variety of fire extinguishers. Brooms and water hoses. Hand or powered tools. Personal protective equipment required; hard hat, gloves, safety shoes, safety glasses and respirators as required.
    • UNIQUE/ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
    Regular reliable onsite attendance is an essential function of this job. Must be able to access all Navy installations, vessels and other shipyards. Must be able to work aboard vessels, climb ladders, work in tanks and confined spaces, and work at heights. Must be able to work evening and weekend hours. Exposure to fumes, odors, dust, gases, chemicals, various extreme temperatures and humidity levels and low ventilation conditions, all of which can cause discomfort and/or respiratory difficulties.
