The Department maintains community appearance and enhances the quality of life in Aurora's neighborhoods through outreach, education, code enforcement, and neighborhood improvement programs.Primary Duties & Responsibilities Perform interior and exterior inspections of commercial buildings, multi‑family complexes, residential properties, and undeveloped land to ensure compliance with municipal codes and ordinances related to public nuisances, zoning, trash, weeds, signs, housing standards, and more.Interpret and enforce City codes and ordinances pertaining to zoning, housing, building, and planning.Research property ownership and schedule detailed inspections through the Multi‑Family Systematic Housing Inspection Program (Aurora Health and Housing Code – Chapter 22, Article XV).Coordinate and conduct inspection of rental properties to ensure compliance with general housing, electrical, plumbing, and structural maintenance requirements.Issue notices of violation, contact homeowners and businesses, and prepare electronic records and reports for abatements, court actions, daily activities, enforcement actions, and inspections.Compile documentation for issuing summonses to municipal court, testify in municipal court, and photograph evidence of violations.Attend neighborhood meetings, provide presentations, and collaborate with community members and local government to educate on City codes.Participate in conflict resolution procedures, respond to community concerns, and act as liaison among residents and City departments.Perform occasional weekend work, be on‑call, and provide service as needed during evenings, weekends, and holidays.Minimum Qualifications & Working Conditions High School Diploma or GED.At least one year of experience in enforcement‑related fieldwork, including investigations, research, and resolution of complaints.Preferred: Colorado Association of Code Enforcement (CACEO) Basic and Advanced Certifications; OC Pepper Spray and RCB certification (required or to be obtained within 6 months).Knowledge of building, construction, and housing practices, standards, procedures, and requirements; dispute resolution techniques; general computer and software skills.Strong interpersonal, analytical, reasoning, and independent judgment skills.Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with employees, citizens, and elected officials; communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.Work under high stress with little supervision, including overtime, evenings, weekends, and holidays.Physical demands: moderate work, lift up to 25 lb, frequent walking, standing, bending, and the ability to climb stairs and move equipment.Work environment: indoor and outdoor, varying weather, potential for dusty or noisy conditions, occasional hazardous materials exposure, and direct contact with residents.Licenses: Valid Colorado Driver's License with a clean driving history; vehicle issued by the City of Aurora.Licensing, Certification, and Other Requirements OC Pepper Spray and RCB certification required for use or to be obtained within 6 months.Uniform, badge, body armor, body‑worn camera, digital camera, and vehicle‑mounted computers provided by the City.Drug testing and thorough criminal background check for all selected candidates.Equal Employment Opportunity The City of Aurora is an equal opportunity employer and will not discriminate on the basis of sex, race, age, sexual orientation, creed, national origin, disability, military status, or gender identity, except as provided by law.
