    Position Description

    Step into a role where your electrical expertise powers an entire city! The City of Fresno is looking for skilled Electricians to help maintain and enhance vital systems - from streetlights and traffic signals to City-owned facilities and advanced control equipment.     Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

    • Install and upgrade electrical systems, conduits, wiring, and fixtures across City facilities
    • Maintain and repair lighting, power, heating, and fire alarm systems
    • Service, troubleshoot, and overhaul traffic signal controllers and electronic components
    • Diagnose and repair motors, generators, pumps, and related electrical equipment
    • Test, locate, and resolve issues in electrical circuits and systems
    • Perform overhead repairs using aerial boom equipment and replace damaged cables and fixtures
    • Conduct preventative maintenance on 15kV substations, switchgear, transformers, and breakers
    • Program, calibrate, and repair PLCs, VFDs, fiber optics, and process control instrumentation
    • Utilize trade tools and safety practices to complete work efficiently and safely

    • Perform related duties as assigned

    Duties and schedules may vary by assignment, please inquire about specific duties and/or schedules if called upon for an interview. Incumbents may be required to work any shift; overtime, nights, weekends, and holidays as needed. This position may require incumbents to perform standby duty on a rotating basis.

    The current vacancies exist in the Department of Public Works. However, this classification also exists in the PARCS, Water Division of Public Utilities, Wastewater Division of Public Utilities, and General Services departments. Immediate and future vacancies will be filled from this eligible list for a period of three (3) months from the date the eligible list is created, with the option of extending that period at the City's discretion. If the examination process is suspended for this recruitment, the eligible list may be limited to three (3) months.

    The Requirements

    Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications on or before the posted filing deadline in order to qualify for the examination and does not assure a place on the eligibility list.

    Completion of a recognized four-year electrical apprenticeship program or equivalent

    AND

    One (1) year of experience as a journey-level Electrician in an industrial setting performing trouble shooting and a wide variety of electrical/electronic repairs and installation work.

    NOTE: Six (6) years of experience as a journey-level Electrician in an industrial setting performing trouble shooting and a wide variety of electrical/electronic repairs and installation work may be acceptable as equivalent.

    Additional Requirements

    Possession of a Class C California Driver's License is required at time of appointment and must be maintained through entire term of employment in this class. Candidates considered for hire must provide proof of a valid driver's license and current copy of their driving record.

    Depending upon assignment, may be required to obtain a valid California Commercial Class B Driver's License without airbrake restriction within 6 months of appointment and maintain the commercial driver's license for the entire term of employment in this class.

    Depending upon assignment, must possess a valid Electrician’s Certificate of Competency issued by the City of Fresno Board of Electrical Examiners at time of appointment and maintain a valid certificate for the entire term of employment in this class.

    Eligibles considered for hire will be required to successfully pass a department interview and a Department of Justice fingerprint process prior to employment with the City of Fresno.

    Some positions have been designated as being 'safety sensitive' and require those offered employment to successfully pass a drug test prior to employment. Federal law requires that applicants for positions involving the operation of certain transit vehicles, revenue service vehicles, the transportation of hazardous materials, or heavy equipment over 26,001 pounds requiring a commercial driver's license, must undergo pre-employment drug testing as a condition of employment. This classification is subject to random drug and alcohol testing throughout entire term of employment in this class.

    The Selection Process

    The examination process may consist of the following:

    WRITTEN EXAMINATION - 100%: A job-related written examination will be administered which may test a candidate's knowledge of standard practices, materials, tools, and equipment of the electrical trade, knowledge of local and national electrical codes and solid-state electronic systems; reading diagrams, safety practices and mathematics and/or other job-related items. Candidates must achieve a passing score to qualify for the eligible list.

    The written exam is tentatively scheduled for the week of July 27th, 2026 .

    Those candidates certified to the eligible list may be required to participate in a Departmental Skills Demonstration as part of the department selection process.

    Veteran’s Preference

    If an examination is conducted for a position within the classified service, qualified veterans who pass the examination will have five (5) points added to their final score. Candidates must submit a copy of their DD214 Member 4 form or electronic copy indicating honorable discharge with each application prior to the filing deadline.

    DROP (Deferred Retirement Option Program): an optional, voluntary program that allows an employee to deposit retirement benefits in a special savings account within the Retirement System while continuing to work for the City of Fresno for up to 10 years. Participation minimum is age 50 and vested. Benefits include ownership of accumulated funds, compound interest earnings, and alternative distribution options.
