Dietitian (Advanced Level Practice)

The Veterans Health Administration is seeking a Dietitian (Advanced Level Practice) for the VA Black Hills Health Care System in Fort Meade, SD. This position serves as a subject matter expert in advanced clinical nutrition and conducts comprehensive nutrition assessments for Veterans using the Nutrition Care Process to ensure high-quality nutrition care under an advanced and expanded scope of practice.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a subject matter expert in advanced clinical nutrition.
  • Lead dietitians and specialty multidisciplinary teams in developing nutrition-related services, policies, procedures, and protocols.
  • Provide comprehensive medical nutrition care using the Nutrition Care Process in a specialty program and/or various patient care settings.
  • Base individualized nutrition interventions on current research, evidence-based guidelines, and best practices.
  • Provide nutrition education to individuals, small groups, large groups, peers, licensed practitioners, medical students, interns, and residents as applicable.
  • Provide consultative services regarding advanced therapies, policies, procedures, and research in quality nutritional care.
  • Develop, monitor, and direct practice-specific benchmarks based on standards of care or national initiatives.
  • Use advanced nutrition expertise and current research to plan, implement, and evaluate organizational initiatives.
  • Lead implementation of new nutrition initiatives or practice changes to support strategic goals.
  • Establish goals, measure outcomes, and report progress to medical center committees, health care teams, and professional groups.
  • Lead staff, create and validate competencies, and develop training activities.
  • Lead nutrition research studies or performance improvement projects and communicate findings.
  • Present seminars, workshops, and lectures on current and changing nutrition concepts.
  • Perform other related duties appropriate for the grade and assignment.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen. Non-citizens may only be appointed when qualified citizens cannot be recruited in accordance with VA policy.
  • Must be proficient in written and spoken English.
  • Must be subject to a background/security investigation.
  • Selective Service registration is required for males born after December 31, 1959.
  • Must complete all application requirements and online onboarding requirements.
  • Must provide acceptable identification for employment eligibility verification.
  • Must participate in the seasonal influenza vaccination program as required for Department of Veterans Affairs health care personnel.
  • Selected applicant may be required to serve a one-year or two-year trial period.

Registration and Certification Requirements:

  • Must be a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist or Registered Dietitian registered with the Commission on Dietetic Registration.
  • Must hold an advanced practice certification from a nationally recognized certifying body.
  • Qualifying certifications may include Board Certified-Advanced Diabetes Management or Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist.
  • Current VHA Dietitians covered by the grandfathering provision may not be promoted to a higher grade if they do not meet current RDN/RD requirements.

GS-12 Advanced Level Practice Dietitian Qualifications:

  • Must have one year of experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level.
  • Must hold qualifying advanced practice certification, such as Board Certified-Advanced Diabetes Management or Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist.
  • Must demonstrate skill in leading a team in implementation of nutrition-related activities.
  • Must demonstrate skill in using evidence-based practice guidelines to establish or modify goals and improve patient outcomes.
  • Must be able to communicate in writing to develop policies and standard operating procedures.
  • Must be able to serve as a nutrition expert providing technical guidance, direction, and staff development.
  • Must be able to lead research or performance improvement studies.
  • Must be able to present complex nutrition information to large groups of health care providers to influence care delivery.

Preferred Experience:

  • Subject matter expertise in nutrition and diabetes.
  • Experience overseeing medical nutrition therapy for inpatient and diabetes care plans for complex and high-risk patients.

Physical Requirements:

  • Selected applicant must participate in a pre-employment examination or evaluation.
  • Driving physical is required.
  • Questions about physical demands or environmental factors may be addressed during the evaluation or examination.
