The Kentucky Department of Corrections seeks motivated individuals ready to take on the challenge. Correctional Officers play a critical role in maintaining safety and control within correctional institutions, working as a team to protect safety, security, and public health.ResponsibilitiesMaintain control of the institution to provide safety and security of the facility, inmates, staff, and the general public by enforcing rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.Supervise inmate activities in housing units, dining areas, recreation, and work areas.Attend to the medical, visitation, personal property, and recreational needs of inmates.Inspect and patrol the grounds for contraband, unauthorized personnel, and other security risks.Complete required reports and daily logs.Conduct inmate counts, security rounds, and searches.Ideal CandidateStrong communication skills.Observation skills.Team player.Attention to detail.Ability to work under pressure.Minimum RequirementsEducation: High school graduate.Experience, Training, or Skills: None.Substitute Education for Experience: None.Substitute Experience for Education: None.Special RequirementsMust be twenty years of age.Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.For the Department of Juvenile Justice, must successfully complete the Department of Juvenile Justice Training Academy within six months of employment.Must maintain required licensure(s), certification(s), or credentials for the length of employment.Other RequirementsAll applicants must comply with federal and state laws concerning the carrying, use, and possession of firearms and ammunition.Employees are prohibited from using medical cannabis, despite its legalization in Kentucky.Compensation DetailsApproved Locality Premium of $5.23 per hour.Shift Premium – $2.13 per hour.Weekend Premium – $2.13 per hour.Holiday Premium – $2.13 per hour.Working ConditionsWork environment is hazardous due to presence of convicted felons or juvenile detainees.
