Description

Controls and directs vehicular and elementary school aged pedestrian traffic at designated crossing areas during regularly scheduled time periods. Ensures the safety of all elementary school aged pedestrian traffic within the crosswalks under command.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Controls and directs vehicular traffic at designated crossings to assist children cross the intersection in safety.
  2. Controls and directs elementary school aged children at the intersection and in the crossing area to assure conformity with traffic.
  3. Records and reports flagrant traffic violators to patrol officers for follow-up.
  4. Reports uncooperative children to the Captain of the Crossing Guards for immediate follow-up.
  5. Performs related job duties as assigned.


Requirements

Schedule:

1 hour per day while school is in session (1/2 hour before school starts and 1/2 at the end of the school day).

Education:

Requires a level of knowledge normally acquired through the successful completion of high school.

Experience:

This is an entry level position; no prior work experience is required. However, individuals must be at least 18 years old.

Interpersonal Skills:

Requires a level of interpersonal skill necessary to effectively and forcefully communicate instructions and commands to children within the limits of the crossing post, as well as parents, school representatives, drivers, and local residents.

Analytical Abilities:

Requires the ability to quickly identify and assess the potential for bodily injury and take defensive steps to prevent or minimize these opportunities.

Working Conditions:

Requires working out-of-doors throughout the school year on split shifts in all weather conditions ranging from mild to severe. Exposure to vehicular traffic on a daily basis under a variety of illumination levels.
