Crossing Guard
Under the general supervision of the Crossing Guard Supervisor, this position directs actions of children and traffic at street intersections and crossing zones to ensure safe crossing while children attend school.
Essential functions include preparing school crossing zones by turning on the 20 MPH flashing lights and placing warning cones in the street. Assists children safely across the street/through the crossing zone, while watching traffic closely, and stopping cars if necessary. When children are finished crossing, removes cones from street and turns off the 20 MPH flashing lights. Repeats this process twice daily when children travel to and from school. Sees, hears, and quickly and accurately responds to emergency safety situations. Arrives to street/crossing zone on time and ready to assist with crossing. Participates in special events as asked by Draper Police Department as needed. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum qualifications include a high school diploma or G.E.D., related experience preferred, and a valid Utah Driver License.
Knowledge of current Utah traffic laws and emergency procedures relating to traffic control is required. Skill with accurate judgment of traffic flow, speed, and direction of travel activities, and considerable responsibility for the use of discretion and independent judgment in the safe crossing of children is required. Ability to be punctual and ready to assist with crossings, correct use of the English language; must be able to communicate effectively verbally and in writing using proper grammar and spelling; ability to follow written and verbal instructions, prioritize travel activities, work effectively with children, parents, and school employees and officials during the school year.
Position requires a variety of physical activities while working outdoors. Regularly required to talk, hear, see, walk, sit, stand, reach, use hands/finger to feel, handle, and grip, climb or balance and stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Mental application utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, emotional stability and discriminating thinking and creative problem solving. May be confined to small spaces to perform work. Regular exposure to wet and/or humid conditions. (Performance of duties may require working in varied weather conditions such as extreme cold or hot conditions.) Frequent exposure to fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and dusty or greasy conditions. Frequent exposure to high levels of noise. Operate equipment and drive vehicles. Must lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
