Position Summary
The Crossing Guard is responsible for ensuring the safe crossing of school children and other pedestrians at designated crosswalks before and after school. This part-time position plays an important role in promoting public safety by directing pedestrian traffic, monitoring vehicle compliance, and helping create a safe environment for students traveling to and from school.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist children and pedestrians in safely crossing streets at designated crosswalks before and after school.
- Monitor traffic and ensure vehicles come to a complete stop before allowing pedestrians to cross.
- Communicate clearly with children, parents, and drivers using hand signals and verbal instructions as appropriate.
- Remain alert to changing traffic conditions and respond appropriately to ensure pedestrian safety.
- Report suspicious activity, traffic concerns, accidents, or unsafe conditions to the appropriate supervisor.
- Follow all safety guidelines, policies, and procedures established by the Clinton City Police Department.
- Maintain regular attendance and punctuality for assigned shifts.
- Wear all required safety equipment and maintain a professional appearance while on duty.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions, including heat, rain, snow, and cold temperatures.
- Reliable transportation to and from assigned crossing locations.
- Ability to remain alert, attentive, and focused while standing for extended periods.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment and remain calm in potentially hazardous situations.
- Must successfully pass a background check prior to employment.
- Work is performed outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Regular exposure to vehicle traffic and roadway noise.
- Requires standing and/or walking for up to two hours per shift.
- May occasionally be required to lift or carry items weighing up to 20 pounds.
- Regular morning and afternoon shifts that coincide with the local school schedule.
- Typical workdays follow the school calendar and may include split shifts before and after school.
- Additional hours may occasionally be available for special school events or to cover other crossing locations.
