Position Description
The Part-Time, Night Court Assistant, is a Part-Time, non civil service position and will serve as an assistant at the Davidson County Magistrate Court located within the Downtown Detention Center assisting Judicial Magistrates with a variety of duties. Magistrate Court is commonly referred to as Night Court although it actually operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Davidson County Judicial Magistrates process arrestees and set bail/bond pursuant to Tennessee state law. The Night Court Assistant position will assist the Magistrate on duty by providing essential information, gathering needed information, facilitating compliance with statutory bond conditions, and assisting persons seeking an order of protection. Night Court Assistants are paid by the hour and are part-time positions. There are no set hours. Shifts and hours will vary, not to exceed 19 hours per week. The current hourly rate is $35.00 - $37.00 per hour. Interested qualified applicants should send resume to General Sessions Court Administrator Kyle Sowell. Typical Duties
- Magistrate assistant will maintain records in accordance with TBI and FBI procedure.
- Magistrate Assistant will coordinate with Global Positioning Systems (GPS) providers relating to arrestees who are released on GPS monitoring.
- In cases involving certain domestic violence offenses, Magistrate Assistant will contact alleged victims to ensure compliance with Tennessee law regarding GPS monitoring.
- Magistrate Assistant will assist persons seeking an order of protection, including non-English speaking petitioners.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree plus three (3) years of professional experience in an administrative, financial, technical, or related field. Additional experience may be considered in lieu of education (1:1 ratio). Candidates with accreditations earned in a foreign institute are encouraged to apply. Note: Per Metro Ordinance No. SO94-1078. All employees of the Metropolitan Government shall be residents of the State of Tennessee or become residents of the state within six (6) months of employment as a prerequisite to employment with the Metropolitan Government.
Preferred Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Legal & Procedural Knowledge- Ability to understand Tennessee law relating to domestic violence, Orders of Protection, bond conditions, and relevant court procedures
- Compliance Standards: Familiarity with legal requirements and protocols related to offender supervision and GPS/electronic monitoring
- Privacy & Confidentiality: Adherence to ethical and legal standards protecting sensitive information and protecting arrestee's constitutional rights
- Previous legal or criminal justice experience
- Professional legal licensure a plus
- Interviewing & Communication: Ability to communicate effectively with alleged offenders, victims, law enforcement, and court officials
- Conflict Resolution: Skills in managing difficult conversations and de-escalating tense situations
- Empathy & Sensitivity: Understanding the dynamics of the criminal justice system
- Time Management: Managing multiple cases at one time
- Record Keeping: Maintaining accurate and organized records of all activities
