Dispatcher
Do you keep your composure in stressful situations and have a desire to help serve your community? Support the West Allis Police & Fire Departments as a Dispatcher. Some duties include receiving 911 calls and non-emergency calls for police, fire, and emergency medical services. Dispatchers regularly utilize phones, radio equipment, Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) systems, door controls, and a variety of other programs within the computer system. Dispatchers are trained in or become certified in CPR, Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD), Wisconsin State Portals, and a variety of other disciplines. You must be able to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and long and odd hours when required. Exceptional written and oral communication skills are a must for this position. Examples of Duties
- Answer and route emergency and non-emergency calls for service received via telephone.
- Dispatch and direct emergency personnel, consider call priority, availability and the number/types of personnel needed.
- Administer emergency medical dispatch instructions through ProQA Priority Dispatch.
- Monitor all police/fire/EMS units and document their locations or actions, record changes of status; Possess multitasking ability to monitor telephones, radio transmissions, scanner receptions and conversations.
- Maintain vast knowledge of the geography of the city, including streets, major intersections, house numbering system, freeways, borders & landmarks.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma (or equivalent)
- A minimum of two years' experience in administrative support and/or customer service including extensive customer service interaction.
- Ability to accurately type 35 wpm and basic knowledge of data entry as well as utilizing software in accordance with the needs of the department.
- Preferred knowledge and proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite programs such as Microsoft Outlook (mail, calendar, tasks), Word (templates, forms, mail merge, reviewing) and Excel; and Adobe Reader.
- Basic skills in English grammar/writing and math.
- Experience working in team environments as well as in diverse backgrounds.
Method of Selection & Supplemental Information
Applicants selected to move forward must attend a written test on Monday, August 24, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. at the Police Department. No make-up testing dates will be offered.
Candidates who successfully advance in the process will participate in face-to-face interviews on Thursday, August 27, 2026. No alternate interview dates or make-up interviews will be available.
