Job Description

Job Summary

The purpose of this position is to perform professional and supervisory responsibilities related to development, coordination, and implementation of various arts and crafts programs at Jaycee Park Center for Arts and Crafts and special events in the community; oversees facility by maintaining equipment, supervise full-time and part-time staff, and performs related work as required.

The hiring range for this position is $57,616.00 to $61,500.00 per year. The full pay range is $57,616.00 to $89,273.60 per year.

FLSA Exemption Status: Non-Exempt

Examples of Duties

  • Plans, organizes, and supervises a variety of arts and crafts programs such as but not limited to pottery, painting, drawing, dance, decorative and fiber arts.
  • Plans, organizes, and supervises a variety of special events and day camps.
  • Works with local art clubs to provide recreational opportunities.
  • Serves as program leader or instructor as needed.
  • Meets and works with various community groups and organizations.
  • Coordinates center activities with special city-wide programs in arts and crafts, and related recreation functions.
  • Schedules the use of center facilities.
  • Maintains a ceramic facility, requiring knowledge of equipment such as potters' wheels and kilns.
  • Supervises a full-time Recreation Assistant (Art Assistant & Pottery Coordinator), a Staff Support Specialist I, and part-time facility attendants, art instructors, and specialists; recruits, trains, and evaluates staff to carry out center programs.
  • Prepares and maintains reservation and attendance records and reports, employee time sheets, accident reports, and other regular and special records and reports.
  • Oversees the center's operating budget, including expenditures and revenue tracking.
  • Represents the center on community and city-wide event committees (e.g., Youth Arts Festival) and maintains ongoing relationships with community art agencies to promote programs.
  • Conducts facility inspections and coordinates routine maintenance of center facilities and equipment with parks division.
  • Reports damages and losses.
  • Collects fees, payments, and memberships.
  • Enters requisitions for supplies and equipment necessary to operate various programs.
  • Develops and manages marketing and communications for the center, including social media and email campaigns (e.g., Constant Contact) promoting programs and events.


Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in Fine Art with a concentration in Ceramics or a closely related field; and
  • Three years of recreation or related experience
  • Four years of comparable experience as a pottery studio manager (preferred)
  • Prior experience loading and firing kilns is required
  • CPR and First Aid/AED Certification (must be obtained within 90 days of hire)
  • Previous experience working with youth and adults preferred
  • Prior pottery teaching experience preferred

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of:
  • Principles, practices, and policies of a variety of municipal recreation programs and activities
  • Customer service techniques
  • Policies and regulations affecting the operation of a pottery studio and art center
Skill in:
  • First Aid and CPR
  • Using pottery tools and equipment and other art-related materials
  • Proactively assisting people in an art studio environment
  • Cost vs benefit analysis
Ability to:
  • Plan, organize, and supervise various art activities
  • Supervise the work of subordinate personnel and volunteers
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing
  • Operate assigned office equipment, including computer equipment and various software packages
  • Operate pottery equipment, including pottery wheels, kilns, pug mill, and other various pottery-related items
  • Meet the mental and physical demands of position
  • Work cooperatively with City officials, other employees, and the general public


Special Requirements

• Valid North Carolina driver's license and acceptable driving record
• Must possess (or obtain within 90 days of hire) and maintain valid Red Cross First Aid, AED, and CPR certifications
•Must be able to lift 50 pounds
•Must be able to work a flexible schedule including nights, weekends, and holidays
