Job Description
OverviewGas Technicians II - Maintenance & Operations are responsible for the maintenance and operation of the City's gas distribution system.
Responsibilities
• Keeps crew truck clean and assists with inventory of parts and supplies to keep the truck fully stocked
• Cleans parts and tools and performs daily maintenance and/or calibration of equipment
• Uses small hand tools, tapping, and stopple equipment. Performs semi-skilled and common labor work such as paint and/or wrap pipe, cutting and threading pipe, pipefitting and assists in other pipeline maintenance as required
• Frequently lifts to 100 pounds with assistance
• Operates backhoe, trenching machine, winch truck, air compressor, dump truck and other semi-heavy maintenance and construction equipment
• Inspects equipment and makes adjustments and minor repairs to maintain equipment in proper operating condition
• Prepares tap cards and/or various inspection reports and documentation in accordance with Department procedures and/or regulatory requirements
• Maintains map books
• Operates a 1 Ton truck, 2 1/2-ton crew truck, winch truck, dump truck, pickup truck, Pole and Float trailers, ditchers, air compressors, welding machine and equipment
• Installs or repairs mains, services, and meter loops
• Removes and/or exchanges gas meters
• Check for gas leaks
• Conducts tum Ons or turn offs
• Checks for stopped meters and house-line pressures using water manometer
• Conducts pressure tests, purges and puts in service new and existing gas mains in the City Gas Distribution system
• Performs intensive manual labor tasks including digging and backfilling ditches, installing pipe, shoveling up to 15 pounds of weight
• Operates line locating equipment and volt meters for taking pipe-to-soil potentials
• Assists the Crew Foreman and fills in during absence in the planning and supervision of the construction or maintenance crews
• Performs plastic pipe fusion with the use of poly fusion equipment
• Performs leak surveys using leak detection equipment such as combustible gas indicator (CGI) or (GMI) and RMLD
• Completes proper forms, logbooks and documentation on maps
• Responds to emergency leak calls and gas odor complaints
• Checks for leaks at mains and services, meters, regulators and on customer premises
• Inspect and lights customer gas appliances
• Maintain and operate self-contained breathing apparatus
• May be asked to perform other duties as assigned
Position Type and Typical Hours of Work
• Non-Exempt - Full-Time
• Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays is a schedule requirement
• In the event of an emergency, employees are required to work to provide for the safety and well-being of the public, including the delivery and restoration of vital services.

Qualifications
• High School Diploma/GED
• Three (3) Years of Experience
Licenses and Certifications
Required
• A valid driver's license is required; successful out-of-state candidates must be able to obtain a valid Texas driver's license within 90 days of hire
Required within six (6) months of hire
• Certified as a competent welder by the Gas Department in both oxy-acetylene and electric arc welding
• Certified to fuse Poly pipe
• Texas Class "A" Commercial Driver's License with Air Brake endorsements

Basis of Rating
A recruitment consultant will evaluate all applications against the posted qualifications and may request additional information. The city may also conduct additional skill assessment tests, in addition to the panel interview.
