Correctional Corporal

The Wyoming Department of Corrections is seeking a Correctional Corporal at the Wyoming Women's Center in Lusk, Wyoming. The Wyoming Women's Center (WWC) was established in 1981. It serves as a primary education and treatment center for female inmates. WWC provides programming, vocational, recreational, and educational programs to allow the WDOC to reduce recidivism through cognitive and behavioral intervention. This position is essential for maintaining the institution's safety and security and is considered a Law Enforcement position, receiving the 20-year retirement and state benefits package.

This is a senior correctional officer level, and the position performs various tasks to maintain the security and safety of a correctional facility, employees, inmates, visitors, and the community. This position is also responsible for ensuring a safe and enjoyable workplace, including participation in initiatives designed to promote a positive work environment.

Essential functions include reporting all security violations, maintaining security by supervising the conduct, work, leisure time, and discipline of inmates, keeping accurate records and documentation of activities, observing and reacting to aggressive inmate behavior, transporting inmates, supervising and directing the work crew of prisoners, investigating security-related incidents, and operating and controlling a large electronic security system at a correctional facility.

Preference may be given to those with two or more years of work experience as a Correctional Officer, plus Advanced Wyoming POST Certification. Must be at least 18 years of age. Must be a U.S. Citizen. Must have a valid driver's license. Must not have a felony or domestic violence conviction or a DUI within the last two years.

Knowledge of prisoner behavior and prisoner social systems, leadership and work management skills, giving or receiving direction in a professional manner, electronic security systems, radio, and paging systems, Department of Corrections policies and procedures, and correctional management principles are required.

Education: Associate's Degree (typically in Criminal Justice). Experience: 0-2 years of progressive work experience in Correctional Security with acquired knowledge at the level of a Correctional Officer. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Correctional Officer Certification awarded by the Wyoming Peace Officers Standards & Training (POST) Commission. Applicants not holding Wyoming POST certification must be awarded certification within 6 months of employment. OR Education & Experience Substitution: 2-4 years of progressive work experience in Correctional Security with acquired knowledge at the level of a Correctional Officer. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Correctional Officer Certification awarded by the Wyoming Peace Officers Standards & Training (POST) Commission. Applicants not holding Wyoming POST certification must be awarded certification within 6 months of employment.

Candidates must successfully pass a background/reference check, medical and psychological evaluation, physical fitness exam, urinalysis drug screen, and other pre-employment testing prior to appointment. Candidates must have the ability to work overtime as required, and the ability to work on any shift, holidays, and weekends. Lifting up to 50 pounds with assistance, walking on cement floors on a constant basis, walking up and down stairs on a frequent basis, bending, squatting, kneeling on a regular basis, kicking the leg up to knee level on an occasional basis, striking or punching with both arms on an occasional basis, exposure to chemical agents such as oleoresin capsicum.
