Summary

The City of Roanoke is seeking a Crime Analyst to research, analyze, and prepare crime data, statistics, and reports. The analyst will locate, compile, and analyze information from computer databases to identify crime patterns, support suspect targeting, and assist in body‑patrol of problem areas.ResponsibilitiesLocate, compile, and analyze crime and traffic data from computer databases to identify crime patterns, assist with suspect targeting, and patrol problem areas.Collect and analyze statistical information using surveys, quantitative and qualitative analytical techniques.Review, analyze, and disseminate crime and traffic reports.Prepare and disseminate reports on crime and traffic data and trends for department staff and other law‑enforcement agencies.Create and maintain computer databases, spreadsheets, and graphical displays.Prepare graphical reports using graphs, charts, diagrams, and maps.Work with the public information officer to develop media information as needed.Collect and compile criminal intelligence information; enter data, reports, or records of criminal intelligence.Prepare reports for Freedom of Information Act requests.Attend and present oral and written briefings on the results of criminal incidents or intelligence analysis during staff briefings.Prepare and conduct citizen and other surveys.Prepare composites of suspects involved in criminal activity as requested by investigators.QualificationsBachelor's degree in statistics, business administration, public administration, geography, criminal justice, or a related field.One to three years of related experience and/or training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.Knowledge of SQL and GIS preferred.Valid driver's permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.Ability to read, analyze and interpret journals, reports, and documents.Effective verbal and written communication skills with management, the public, and fellow employees.Mathematical competence with probability, statistics, fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions.Reasoning ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.Supervisory ResponsibilitiesThis position has no supervisory responsibilities.Physical DemandsRegularly use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk or hear; stand and sit; walk occasionally; frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds; and maintain the ability to adjust vision focus.Work EnvironmentThe work environment is generally quiet with occasional noise from computer equipment and public interactions.
