Job Description

The City of Burlingame is accepting applications for the position of Irrigation Repair Specialist

Under general supervision, to check and perform maintenance and repair work on all City landscape irrigation systems and to perform park maintenance worker duties as required.

Essential Functions ( include but are not limited to):

• Install, repair and modify automatic and manual irrigation systems in parks, medians, and recreation areas
• Identify irrigation system malfunctions and adjust, repair or replace parts as needed
• Install, wire, program, repair and replace controllers
• Inspect public irrigation systems installed by private contractors
• Operate a variety of tools and heavy equipment used in irrigation system maintenance
• Test backflow devices as needed
• Maintain inventory of irrigation supplies
• Install and maintain drinking fountains in City parks
• Install and repair fixtures and plumbing in restrooms in City parks
• Perform duties of Park Maintenance Worker II as needed
• Consults and advise City departments on irrigation issues as needed

Physical, Mental and Environmental Working Conditions:

Understand and read English well enough to understand and carry out instructions; perform heavy manual labor including considerable bending and stooping; lifting up to 55 pounds; kneeling for long periods of time when working on irrigation systems; twisting upper body while getting into and out of trucks and other vehicles; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; hear well enough to follow directions; see well enough to read instructions.

Ideal Candidate

QUALIFICATIONS
Education and/or Experience

Sufficient experience and training to possess the required knowledge, skills, and abilities, typically obtained through at least one year of experience in the repair and servicing of a wide variety of irrigation systems and completion of the equivalent of the twelfth grade.

License/Certificate

• Possession of a valid Class C California driver’s license
• Required to obtain the Backflow Prevention Course Certificate prior to completion of the third year of city service in this position.

Knowledge, Abilities & Skills
Knowledge of: Tools, materials, and procedures used in the maintenance of manual, automatic, and central control irrigation systems; tools, methods, materials, and equipment used in park maintenance work; state and local backflow prevention regulations; and safe work practices.

Ability to: Perform inspections and repair a variety of irrigation systems; read and interpret blueprints and specifications; pass the course on backflow regulations; and maintain records and reports on irrigation systems within the City.

Skill in: Using irrigation system tools and materials safely and efficiently and using park maintenance equipment safely and efficiently.

SELECTION PROCESS
All applications will be reviewed for relevant education, experience, training and other job-related qualifications. Based upon a review of employment applications and supplemental questionnaires received, a limited number of the qualified applicants will be invited to participate in the examination process.

The process will consist of an Oral Panel Interview. An eligibility list will be established from those who pass the examination process with a score of 70% or higher. Current and future vacancies may be filled from this list. The list will remain in effect for at least one year unless exhausted sooner.

The department will invite the most qualified candidates from the eligibility list to a department interview. Depending upon the number of candidates, this process may be altered.

Note: Meeting the minimum qualifications does not guarantee an interview. The City of Burlingame reserves the right, at its discretion, to limit the number of qualified candidates invited to the selection process.
