Deputy SheriffThe Hughes County Sheriff's Office is seeking a dedicated and professional candidate to serve as Deputy Sheriff. Deputies play a vital role in protecting the public, enforcing federal, state, and local laws, and building positive relationships with the community.This position requires individuals with strong integrity, sound judgment, and the ability to perform effectively in high-stress situations. Deputies are trusted representatives of the Sheriff's Office and are expected to uphold the highest standards of professionalism while ensuring the safety and rights of the community they serve.Key ResponsibilitiesDeputy Sheriffs perform a wide range of law enforcement duties including, but not limited to:Patrol assigned areas to deter and detect criminal activity.Respond to emergencies such as accidents, domestic disputes, crimes in progress, and medical incidents.Conduct criminal investigations, gather and preserve evidence, and prepare detailed reports.Apprehend, arrest, and detain suspects while enforcing South Dakota laws.Serve civil process and court orders including subpoenas, evictions, and protection orders.Testify in court and provide clear, professional documentation of investigations.Enforce traffic laws and investigate traffic accidents.Complete ongoing training and attend required meetings.Experience1-2 years of public safety, law enforcement, or military experience preferred.License & Certification RequirementsValid South Dakota Driver's License with the ability to meet departmental driving standards.Ability to obtain South Dakota Law Enforcement Officer Basic Certification.Applicants must:Be at least 21 years of ageHave no felony convictions or domestic violence assault convictionsSuccessfully pass background and drug screeningDemonstrate strong communication and interpersonal skillsBe able to make sound decisions under pressurePhysical & Work EnvironmentThis position requires the ability to perform physically demanding duties, including:Heavy liftingExtended periods of sitting or standingFrequent writing and communicationOccasional kneeling, crouching, and physical exertionExposure to hazardous environmentsUse of law enforcement equipment such as firearms, tasers, and other defensive toolsDeputies must maintain the physical fitness and mental readiness necessary to respond effectively to emergencies and protect themselves and others.Full-Time positionSalary: Approximately $29.00 per hour depending on experienceOpen Until FilledHughes County offers100% employer paid employee health, dental, and life insurance. There is an 8% employer match to the South Dakota Retirement System (SDRS).
