Essential Job Functions
What does a Senior Typist-Clerk do?
- Types and processes court orders, minutes, petitions, and other legal documents requiring the analysis of complex source material and a thorough familiarity with the various legal codes in order to obtain the necessary data.
- Answers questions that require such things as searching for and abstracting technical data and detailed explanation of laws, policies, or procedures, checks non-routine applications, collects variable fees, etc., and refers only unusual inquiries to immediate supervisor.
- Checks legal documents such as writs, petitions, warrants, purchase orders, claims, and bonds for form, validity, and compliance with legal requirements in cases requiring the application of highly specialized knowledge and the resolution of debatable points, and where a mistake in judgment may entail serious consequences.
- Makes statistical computations and analyses, estimates of fees, etc., where specialized knowledge of laws, policies, and procedures are involved to an unusual degree, as in the recording of documents, property assessments, and tax collections.
- Advises employees on problems within his jurisdiction, and on his own initiative, makes such decisions as are permissible.
- Reviews for accuracy and conformity to established procedures the work of others performing preliminary operations in the course of the flow of work.
- Makes final checks of permits, authorizations, etc., without higher level review.
- Prepares correspondence requiring the application of highly specialized knowledge and discrimination in the selection of data or interpretation of laws, rules, or policies.
- Supervises a small section or unit engaged in related work where responsibility for supervision is subordinate to the performance of the highly specialized clerical work.
- Routinely accesses office equipment such as video display terminals, word processors, or personal computers to input data, perform computations, or produce documents not requiring the formatting or programming of such equipment as needed.

Requirements
Requirements to Qualify:
Three years of office clerical experience involving typewriting, one year of which must have been in a specialized clerical capacity*.
Typewriting Skill Requirement:
The Senior Typist Clerk requires a typing proficiency of 40 net words per minute (NWPM).
You may not need to take a typing test if you meet any of the following: Current or former County employees who have held a typing position that required the necessary wpm. Applicants who have already taken and passed the County's typing performance test (administered by the Department of Human Resources) at the required wpm. If your passing score is already on file, it will be transferred automatically-no need to retest. Applicants who passed the “Typing Test - Score-Banking Only” with the required net wpm. Your score will also transfer automatically.Applicants who passed a County typing test administered by a department other than DHR must attach a copy of the typing certificate to the application at the time of filing. If the certificate cannot be attached during filing, it must be emailed to DHRClericalExams@hr.lacounty.gov within seven (7) calendar days.
Candidates who have not taken the typing performance test or met the typing requirement, as mentioned above, will be provided with a link to the Los Angeles County typing performance test during the examination process.
Special Requirement Information:
* Specialized clerical capacity means experience performing specialized clerical duties in a defined subject matter area with continuing responsibility for projects, questions, or problems that arise within an area of a program or functional specialty. This requires knowledge of rules, regulations, and other guidelines relating to completing assignments in the program area assigned. Such experience is gained at the level of Los Angeles County's class of Intermediate Clerk , Intermediate Typist Clerk or higher.
- Examples of specialized capacity office clerical work includes: Cultural and Arts; Compliance and Safety; Consulting, Advisory Services; Customer Service; Education Support; Environmental and Sustainability; Financial; Government and Public Administration; Healthcare; Hospitality and Event Management; Human Resources; IT and Technical Support; Legal; Library; Manufacturing and Production; Marketing and Communications; Nonprofit; Public Relations and Media Management; Quality Assurance; Real Estate; Research and Development; Supply Chain and Logistics, or similar industries.
- Acceptable classes for the experience at the level of Los Angeles County's class of Intermediate Clerk, Intermediate Typist- Clerk, or higher include, but may not be limited to: Account Clerk I; Community Health Worker; Eligibility Worker I; Intermediate Cashier; Invoice Clerk; Ownership Clerk I; Patient Resources Worker; Record System Clerk I; Senior Community Worker I; Sheriff Station Clerk I; Statistical Clerk; Tax Service Clerk I; Transcriber-Typist

If you performed work that differs from the duties described in your class specification and believe you qualify for this opportunity, please provide verification via official documentation of additional responsibility bonus, out-of-class bonus, temporary assignment bonus or reclassification study with CEO Classification within seven (7) calendar days from the last day of filing. Employees do not need to submit such verification if they hold or have held a position that regularly performs functions in alignment with the requirements.
License:
A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.
Physical Class:
2 - Light. This class includes administrative and clerical positions requiring light physical effort that may include occasional light lifting to a 10-pound limit and some bending, stooping, or squatting. Considerable ambulation may be involved.

Applicants must meet the Requirements to Qualify and achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on the examination in order to be placed on the eligible list. Exam Review:
Exam components are not subject to review by candidates. Multiple-choice and/or simulation assessments are not reviewable by candidates per CSR 7.19.
Transfer of Test Components:
If you have taken identical components recently for other exams, your responses may be automatically transferred to this examination. This exam contains test components that might be used on future exams, and your responses could be transferred to that exam.
Test Preparation:
We provide study guides and other test preparation resources to help candidates prepare for employment tests. While the guides may help in preparing for the test, we recommend reviewing all related materials that seem necessary.

Eligibility and Vacancy Information:
Candidates who passed the assessment are placed on an eligible list in the order of their score group for a period of six (6) months. We will use this list to fill vacancies throughout Los Angeles County as they occur.
Selective Certification:
In accordance with TITLE 5 - PERSONNEL, APPENDIX 1 (Civil Service Rule 11.03) of the Los Angeles County Code,
selective certification may be used for some positions that require special skills and/or training.
