About the Opportunity
The City of Ventura is seeking an Environmental Services Assistant to join our Public Works team. This is an entry-level paraprofessional position that provides a great opportunity to support the City’s environmental services programs while developing valuable skills and experience. The role combines administrative and clerical responsibilities with a variety of routine technical and program support activities.
This position works closely with the Environmental Services team and provides an excellent foundation for those interested in building a career in environmental services, public works, or a related field.
Key responsibilities include:
- Develops and delivers educational presentations on environmental programs for community groups, schools, and other audiences; prepares brochures, informational materials, and other outreach resources and helps distribute them through mailings, information sites, and community events.
- Responds to questions, suggestions, and concerns from residents and the public regarding environmental programs; provides information, prepares responses, and coordinates with City staff as needed to address issues and resolve concerns.
- Represents the City at regional meetings and supports assigned environmental programs by responding to questions, coordinating materials and services, maintaining program records, tracking grant-related expenses, and preparing routine grant reports.
- Supports environmental events and activities by coordinating permits, assisting with professional services agreements, and recruiting and scheduling volunteers.
- Provides support to environmental program staff through a variety of activities, including photographing projects and activities, staffing community outreach booths, and assisting with print, radio, television, and other public outreach efforts.
Minimum Qualifications - Required
A combination of education, training and experience equivalent to two years of college coursework in business administration, environmental sciences, or a related field, and 6 months of experience in data collection or clerical record keeping are required.
License: Depending on assignment, possession of a valid California Class C driver's license may be required.
When assigned to K-12 classroom presentations, incumbent is required to undergo live scan fingerprinting and provide proof of a negative tuberculosis test result within the last two years.

The City of Ventura’s Public Works Department plays a central role in building, maintaining, and protecting the community’s infrastructure and natural resources. Accredited by the American Public Works Association (APWA) since 2014, the department applies industry best practices and forward-thinking strategies to deliver high-quality projects that support safety, sustainability, and long-term community resilience.
The department is organized into five divisions that manage the city’s infrastructure, operations, and public services. Together, these divisions provide engineering, construction, transportation, environmental sustainability, fleet and facilities, and property management services that support the community’s growth, connectivity, and quality of life.
