Oversee alternative sentencing programs by collaborating with local businesses and educational institutions to determine program structure, leadership responsibilities, and goalsProcess cases after court or hearings by entering information and documents into case management software and attaching physical case documentsLiaise between the municipal court and the public by receiving, recording, and responding to complaints, requests, and questions by phone or in personProvide general information on court cases, retrieve and review case files and records, assist with required forms, and take court-fee and fine paymentsAssist the judge during court proceedings by recording rulings, managing physical and electronic case information, and assisting defendantsConduct hearings and prepare for trials by evaluating complaints, recording and reviewing witness testimony, reviewing police reports, and reading depositionsDetermine probable cause, issue arrest warrants, and set bailEngage in professional development and maintain awareness of relevant practices, rules, laws, policies, and guidelinesRequirementsAlabama Municipal Court Clerk and Magistrate certification (AAOC certification) OR ability to enroll in an approved magistrates' orientation and certification program within six months of hire and complete the certification programExperience accepting and/or reporting financial processes (e.g., cash receipts, reporting, and collections)Willingness to obtain NCIC certification within six months of employmentCity of Birmingham applicants: Alabama Municipal Court Clerk and Magistrate certification (AAOC certification)City of Birmingham applicants: experience accepting and/or reporting financial processes (e.g., cash receipts, reporting, and collections)City of Birmingham applicants: willingness to obtain NCIC certification within six months of employmentWork may require working outside normal business hours, including holidays, weekends, and overtimePreferred: experience working within a courtroom settingPreferred: experience overseeing municipal court legal proceedingsCore CompetenciesDemonstrates expertise in overseeing alternative sentencing programs and managing case information within a municipal court setting.
