Deputy Constable

Under supervision, the Deputy Constable will be assigned to the Traffic Enforcement Unit as a Traffic/Motorcycle Officer. The Deputy Constable executes criminal arrest warrants and civil process throughout the County. This position enforces all civil, criminal, and traffic laws of the State of Texas and Hays County. This position affects the economic and social wellbeing of the citizens of Hays County. Individuals in this position serve at the pleasure of the current elected official.

Responsibilities include serving civil papers and executing warrants, assisting new officers in the field, providing public assistance, serving as a bailiff, providing traffic enforcement and control, participating in training, utilizing resources, maintaining TCOLE certification, ensuring services meet quality and timeliness standards, enforcing traffic laws, preparing reports and presentations, following up on cases, maintaining patrol vehicle and equipment, maintaining a high profile in the community, observing activities, responding to major traffic accidents, performing civil standby, answering civil questions, attending public meetings, executing warrants on wanted persons, responding to emergencies and criminal incidents, and other duties as assigned.

Knowledge required includes professional knowledge of traffic, criminal, and civil laws, principles and practices of law enforcement, Constable's missions, goals and objectives, methods and techniques to use to dispel a situation, functions of a Deputy Constable, 911 and radio and police procedures, legally acceptable restraint methods, safety issues pertaining to law enforcement, identifying problems and developing solutions, departmental guidelines, criminal warrants, criminal law, civil law, traffic law, courtroom security, civil process, Hays County policies, rules and regulations, MS Word and Excel, maintenance of assigned vehicle and equipment.

Required skills include expressing oneself clearly and concisely, arresting persons with or without resistance, remaining calm under stressful situations, completing assignments in a correct, complete, and timely manner, demonstrating safety, care of assigned equipment and vehicle operations, interpersonal skills, organizational skills, assessing situations and determining the best course of action, interacting with people in all socio-economic levels, listening, written communications for administrative and technical purposes, radio procedure, and general computer skills.

Education and/or experience: High School diploma or GED, at least 3 years of law enforcement experience. Other qualifications, certificates, licenses, registrations: Class C Driver License, ability to obtain a Class M license within 6 months of hire, Certification as a peace officer by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer (TCOLE), successful completion of the Northwestern University Motorcycle School or equivalent TCOLE approved course, ability to maintain firearms proficiency, ability to maintain continuing education requirements for the State of Texas, preferred completion of Intermediate/Advance Accident Investigation Course, preferred SFST and Radar/Lidar certified.
