Entry-Level Police Officer

The City of Urbana invites qualified applicants for the position of Entry-Level Police Officer. Officers perform police protection and other services to safeguard the lives, property, and constitutional rights of the citizens of Urbana. Duties include investigating complaints, disturbances, accidents, and reported criminal activities; testifying in court; training new police officers; responding to crime and accident scenes, emergency situations and other requests for assistance; detecting, apprehending and arresting criminals; enforcing the laws and ordinances of the City; and performing a variety of specialized duties as assigned.

The Urbana Police Department provides a wide range of public service while carrying out the basic police mission through a Community Policing philosophy. The ideal candidate for this position will be able to cope with situations firmly, courteously, tactfully, and with respect for the rights of others; possess excellent communication skills, including written, verbal and interpersonal skills; have a desire to help and serve others; demonstrate honesty and integrity; have close attention to detail; be reliable, responsible, dependable and fulfill obligations; be able to tolerate highly stressful situations calmly and effectively; maintain composure and keep emotions in check, even in very difficult situations; be open to change (positive or negative) and to considerable variety in the workplace; and be understanding and helpful on the job.

Successful candidates in this occupation will be comfortable following set procedures and routines, and a clear line of authority to follow; frequently working with, communicating with, and teaching people; helping or providing service to others; taking risks; leading others; and working with practical, hands-on problems and solutions.

Compensation and benefits for this position include a starting salary of $75,526.47, health insurance through Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Illinois, dental insurance options through Delta Dental, vision, voluntary life, short/long-term disability, accident, and critical illness insurance options, flexible spending plan option, paid holidays, vacation and sick leave.
