Carlsbad Police Department Patrol Officer

Performs a variety of entry level technical law enforcement duties related to enforcing the laws, maintaining the peace, and protecting the citizens of Carlsbad.

Examples of duties include patrolling all areas of the town in police vehicles or on foot, checking for unlocked doors, windows and building security; making business location and residential house checks for possible illegal activities; responding to crimes in progress; securing, defusing and resolving high risk felony calls; securing crime scenes for evidence searches; making preliminary investigation and interrogating complainants, witnesses and suspects; completing complaint questionnaires; performing case follow-up and assisting with investigation activities as assigned; making arrests; responding to calls for assistance; controlling traffic and enforcing traffic laws and ordinances; directing traffic, assisting motorists, issuing citations and warnings for D.W.I.'s, D.U.I.'s, moving violation and investigating accidents involving motor vehicles; preparing and submitting accident, offense, arrests and other forms and reports as necessary; serving summons and subpoenas and keeping records of dispositions; escorting prisoners to and from jail or from one location to another; subduing unruly prisoners when necessary; completing comprehensive reports of daily activities and enforcement actions; preparing for court cases and testifying in court when required; cleaning and maintaining assigned fire arms and vehicles and other special equipment.

Typical qualifications include being a citizen of the United States of America, having reached the age of majority (21-years old), holding a United States high school diploma or its equivalent, holding a valid driver's license, having no felony convictions, having no petty misdemeanor or misdemeanor convictions related to aggravated assault, theft, driving while intoxicated, controlled substances or other crime involving moral turpitude within the three years immediately preceding one's application; not having engaged in habitual or serious criminal behavior, even if no arrest was made, not having been released or discharged under dishonorable conditions from any of the armed forces of the United States, being found to be of good moral character as demonstrated by past or present behaviors, not possessing racist or sexist ideologies or been involved in any incidents involving racist remarks or any form of discrimination in personal life and social media, not having intentionally accessed internet sites for the purpose of viewing child pornography and being free from any physical, mental or emotional condition, which might adversely affect one's performance as a police officer or prohibit one from successfully completing the prescribed basic law enforcement training required by the Law Enforcement Training Act.
