Summary

The Museum Associate serves as an informed and friendly ambassador for the Stowe Center for Literary Activism, sharing the museum's stories, collections, and sites with visitors of all backgrounds and ages.The Museum Associate facilitates guided tours of Stowe's historic home and landscape, and offers engaging, participatory experiences for all visitors that highlight the Stowe Center's mission to encourage social justice and literary activism by exploring the legacy of Harriet Beecher Stowe and all who advocate freedom then and now.Duties include providing general visitor services including admissions, ticketing, retail-related tasks, and sharing information by phone and email. The Museum Associate also assists with the delivery of public programs as assigned. Museum Associates deliver exceptional customer service for all visitors and as such, have the potential to impact Stowe Center revenue through admission sales, merchandise sales, and donations.Successful candidates must maintain a commitment to respectful and responsible collegial relationships. The staff at the Stowe Center are the core of our public programming. [KF1]The Museum Associate reports to the Associate Director of Visitor Experience and the Director of Interpretation and Visitor Experience.Responsibilities:Conduct accurate and informative tours that provide visitors with an understanding of Stowe's life and wider context of 19 th century America, the impact of Uncle Tom's Cabin and her other writings, the Constellation of Black voices who influenced and inspired her, and the historical figures in Hartford who add to the story of hope and freedom.While on tours, engage visitors in discussion and facilitate conversations which may include difficult subjects such as enslavement, race, gender, and discrimination using Stowe Center methods.Present multiple tours a day on site.Respond to different groups of visitors (adults, school children, families) by varying tour content and techniques as appropriate.Assist with visitor services and frontline operations as required, including completing museum store sales, answering the front desk phone, email, and admission/ticketing questions, as well as retail related tasks.Convey the Stowe Center's mission, including announcing current initiatives and upcoming programs.Provide exceptional customer service to all site guestsAssist with monitoring collections security (buildings, objects, grounds) and visitor safety, responding calmly and professionally to emergencies and promptly notifying supervisors of all incidents or unsafe conditions.Assist with the delivery of programs as assigned.Attend staff meetings, training, and use available Stowe resources (staff, library and collections) to continue learning and strengthening your customer service, tour, and facilitation skills.Candidates must maintain a commitment to respectful and responsible collegial relationships.[KF2]Other responsibilities include:Help keep museum shop neat and tidy (occasional vacuuming, light cleaning and dusting).Other ad hoc duties as assigned.Qualifications:Preferred qualifications: Interest/background in history and/or literature that focuses on: women's issues, African American history and literature, American history and literature, and/or American studiesCommitment to the Stowe Center's mission and goalsProfessional demeanor and appearanceEnjoy working with the public, meeting new peopleStrong interpersonal and communication skillsUseful experiences: museum education/interpretation, working with K-12 students, engaging diverse audiences, acting/performance/public speakingAbility to lift boxes and event materials (up to 30lbs)Must be able to walk/stand for an extended period of timeMust be able to do public speakingPosition Requirements:Base of 12 hours per weekEmployee required to work Fridays and weekendsOccasional work eveningsThis position is a unionized position in Local UAW2110 with dues required#J-18808-Ljbffr
