Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• weep, mop, vacuum, and polish floors.
• Clean restrooms and replenish supplies.
• Empty trash and pick up litter around buildings.
• Wash windows, walls, and blinds.
• Operate cleaning and floor care equipment.
• Move and arrange furniture for events.
• Perform minor maintenance and adjust thermostats.
• Lock/unlock doors and conduct security checks.
• Transport supplies and materials as needed.
• Perform related duties as required

Incumbents assigned to the Animal Center will be exposed to a working environment with animals (primarily dogs and cats) which may lead to possible exposure of unpleasant odors and noises, allergens, interactions with animals, and possible exposure to zoonotic diseases; and may be required to handle and restrain animals humanely and safely using approved protocols and practices, personal protective equipment (PPE) and practices including assisting in cleaning and disinfecting kennel areas, food dishes and equipment along with feeding and exercising animals.
Duties and schedules may vary by assignment, please inquire about specific duties and/or schedules if called upon for an interview.

The current vacancy exists in the Airports Department. However, the position also exists in the Animal Center and Transportation departments. Immediate and future vacancies will be filled from this eligible list for a period of three (3) months from the date the eligible list created, with the option of extending that period at the City's discretion. Should the competitive process be suspended for this recruitment, the eligibility list may be limited to three (3) months.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that are necessary to safely, effectively, and efficiently perform the essential functions of this job with or without reasonable accommodation.

This classification’s physical demands involve medium work exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Additionally, the following physical demands may be required: balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, feeling, grasping, handling, hearing, kneeling, lifting, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, stooping, talking, visual acuity, walking.

THE REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications on or before the posted filing deadline in order to qualify for the examination and does not assure a place on the eligibility list.

Education:

Possession of a High School Diploma or equivalent GED completion.

Experience:

Six (6) months of paid experience performing janitorial or custodial work.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

The work experience section MUST be completed with detailed duties, dates and weekly hours worked for each title held. Please SPECIFY WORK DUTIES related to janitorial or custodial work.

Possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License may be required. Candidates considered for hire may be required to provide proof of a valid driver's license and current copy of their driving record.

The selected eligible candidates certified will be required to successfully pass a Department interview and a Department of Justice fingerprint prior to employment with the City of Fresno.

Eligibles certified for consideration to the Airports Department will be required to successfully pass a Department interview, extensive background investigation and Department of Justice fingerprinting process prior to employment with the City of Fresno.

SELECTION PROCESS

The examination process may consist of the following:

Written Examination: 100% - A multiple-choice job-related written examination will be administered which will determine placement on the eligible list. The written examination is designed to assess a candidate's knowledge, skills, and abilities in the following areas: custodial practices /cleaning techniques and appropriate safety practices; ability to follow written instructions; ability to apply skills in interpersonal relations; tool and equipment identification and usage and/or other items related to the position.

Candidates must achieve a passing score to qualify for the eligible list.

The written exam is tentatively scheduled for the week of November 30, 2026.

VETERAN’S PREFERENCE

Candidates applying for veteran's preference are required to submit a copy of their DD214 with their application during the specified filing period. Evidence must be presented to indicate that the candidate was discharged honorably from the military service. Veterans, including City employees, must resubmit proof of honorable service for every examination for which veteran's preference credit is requested. Qualified veterans who pass the examination will have five (5) points added to their final score.

HEALTH REIMBURSEMENT ARRANGEMENT (HRA)

Eligible retirees can use the remaining Sick Leave balance, in excess of 100 hours, at 80% of hourly rate and other qualified leave balances, tax free, to reimburse health insurance premiums and other qualified medical expenses.

RETIREMENT - City of Fresno Retirement Systems, one of the best funded public systems in the state. Reciprocity with other public California systems. Vested in Retirement benefits after 5 years of service. City employees do not participate in Social Security.

DROP (Deferred Retirement Option Program): an optional, voluntary program that allows an employee to deposit retirement benefits in a special savings account within the Retirement System while continuing to work for the City of Fresno for up to 10 years. Participation minimum is age 50 and vested. Benefits include ownership of accumulated funds, compound interest earnings, and alternative distribution options.
