    Description:

    Jefferson County Open Space (JCOS) is seeking a Tour Program Facilitator to join the Hiwan Museum team located in Evergreen, CO. The Tour Program Facilitator is responsible for on-site Museum operations during Museum open and closed hours, primarily during the weekend. This includes leading weekend tours, directing weekend volunteers, and part-time tour guide staff, various administrative work including maintaining a variety of records through digital databases, answering the telephone, responding to inquiries, and being responsible for building operations while on duty. Additionally, the Tour Program Facilitator assists in program development, creating training materials, developing exhibits, training docents and volunteers, and presenting public programming as needed.

    This position is a part of the Cultural Resources Team (CRT) which is tasked with the protection and management of cultural and paleontological resources on Open Space properties including 365 cultural sites, 34 paleontological sites, and more than a hundred heritage buildings and structures including the historic Hiwan Museum.

    The ideal candidate will have experience working within historic house museums, delivering interpretive tours and programming to visitors of all ages. The ability to work both independently and within a team environment is preferred.

    SCHEDULE:

    This position is aligned with the museum hours and is expected to work Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and one or two other weekday/s to be coordinated with the rest of the Hiwan team. The typical 40-hour week schedule can be either a 4-day or a 5-day work week, with various events/programs that may shift the schedule a few times a year, allowing for a flex-schedule those weeks. Due to the nature of the work, this position operates on-site at the Hiwan Heritage Park in Evergreen, CO.

    COMPENSATION:

    Target Hiring Range: $29.00 - $36.00 USD Hourly

    Compensation will be determined based on education, experience, and skills.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
    • Open and close facility. Provide a welcoming environment. Conduct interpretive tours. Coordinate and supervise group tours. Assist with updating the Hiwan Museum Calendar, events, programs, maintenance, museum operations, and other site-specific tasks as assigned. Perform light building and ground maintenance including sweeping, trash removal, dusting, and light snow and ice removal. Assist in cleaning the Museum and Outbuildings, including but not limited to mopping, vacuuming, dusting and dropping off/picking up dry cleaning of museum items. Assist with the Annual Deep Clean. Administrative tasks include but are not limited to: Maintain records of attendance and record quarterly museum visitation, answer telephone, and receive inquiries, refill Jefferson County brochure holders, collect mail and distribute to appropriate staff, provide information to the public based on knowledge of programs and activities, or refer callers to appropriate personnel. Make decisions in the best interest of the museum, the safety of visitors, volunteers and employees.
    • Work with staff to coordinate and offer continuing training opportunities for volunteers and part-time tour guides at Hiwan Museum. Oversee volunteer recruitment and volunteer retention. Coordinate and schedule tour shifts ensuring there is always coverage for open hours. Ensure adherence to established policies, procedures and standards. Resolve problems as situations arise independently and/or with the help of the Hiwan Museum team. Track volunteer hours and activities using volunteer database software. Evaluate and adopt or refine volunteers' suggestions and make decisions in the best interest of the museum visitors, volunteers and employees. Operate within the museum budget, and collaborate with the Hiwan Museum team to evaluate museum needs alongside budget needs, and track museum expenditures. Assist other museum staff in organizing volunteer recognition events.
    • A secondary role will be to support the Museum Specialist with operations, research, exhibit development, and artifact care, when time permits. Assist in updates to exhibit rooms which involves artifact handling including heavy furniture. Assist in Integrated Pest Management.
    • Assist full-time staff when needed on joint events, programs and projects.
    • Assist other museum staff in development, design, research, coordination and oversight of educational programs and activities. This includes aiding in material development, training, and general collaboration with Museum and Open Space staff.
    • Use data entry software, Excel spreadsheets, and file systems to enter, store and retrieve information. Summarize data in preparation of standardized reports, including volunteer and tour participation reports, contribute information for budget development and monthly financial summaries on program and supply expenditures.
    • As needed, represent the County and department as a member of various committees and professional organizations. Attend various events hosted by local community partners.
    • As needed, attend meetings and provide input based on expertise and observations. Evaluate locations, times, and value of pop-up events to best represent the museum. Promote tours, volunteer recruitment, programs and community outreach.Collaborate and develop a professional relationship with our stakeholders and community partners.
    • Understand and maintain building operations including interface with Open Space maintenance personnel, broader Jefferson County personnel, contractors, on-site security system, and emergency services as needed.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    Minimum Qualifications:
    • 1 year of work-related experience in a history-related museum, tour guide, historic site interpreter, history educator or a related field.
    • Bachelor’s degree in Museum Studies, Public History, History, Social Sciences-Anthropology , Library & Information Science preferred, or a closely related field.
    • Note an equivalent combination of education and experience is acceptable.


    Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities :
    • Ability to work independently and in a team.
    • Ability to work on the weekends.
    • Proficient in Microsoft office suite.
    • Experience with Workday.
    • Experience with PastPerfect collection database software.
    • Experience providing guided tours and conducting education programming.
    • Ability to hit the ground running and move easily between tasks.
    • Experience developing museum programming.
    • Able to use a laptop and tablet computers.
    • Able to lift 50lbs.
    • Able to climb stairs multiple times during a shift at altitude.
    • Must be organized and can pay attention to minute details.
    • Ability to effectively communicate with staff and volunteers to ensure museum open hours are fully covered.
