    DEFINITION

Performs a wide variety of specialized functions associated with Library customer service, check - out and check-in of materials, creating and updating customer accounts, attendant tasks, and providing technology support consisting of computer equipment, software and Internet access.

    DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

A Library Assistant I is the entry-level classification in the Library Assistant series. Initially under close supervision, incumbents learn and perform routine tasks associated with providing customer service to patrons. As experience is gained, assignments become more varied, complex, and difficult; close supervision and frequent review of work lessen as an incumbent demonstrates skill to perform the work independently. Positions at this level usually perform most of the duties required of the positions at the II-level, but they are not expected to function at the same skill level and usually exercise less independent discretion and judgment in matters related to work procedures and methods. Work is usually supervised while in progress and fits an established structure or pattern. Exceptions or changes in procedures are explained in detail as they arise.

A Library Assistant II is the fully qualified journey-level classification in the Library Assistant series. Positions at this level are distinguished from the Library Assistant I by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned, working independently, and exercising judgment and initiative. Positions at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit. This class further distinguished from a Library Assistant I in that it has additional responsibility for cataloging materials, placing orders for books and other materials, and providing limited reference and reader’s advisory services.

A Library Assistant II may provide work direction to Library Pages. A Library Assistant III is the lead classification in the Library Assistant series with responsibility for overseeing and coordinating the work of employees in lower-level clerical support positions. Additionally, this classification is responsible for responding to the most complex complaints as well as interpreting and enforcing policies and procedures.

    SUPERVISION

Works under the immediate supervision of a supervisor or manager who provides detailed work assignments, periodically reviews work in progress, and carefully reviews completed work. Work direction may be received from a Library Assistant III. No supervision is exercised.
