    FTE: 1.0

    Salary Level: CSO1101, $33.70hr

    SUMMARY

    This position patrols assigned Tacoma Public Schools (TPS) properties to protect property, staff, and students, and assists the principal in maintaining a positive learning and working school environment.

    ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

    1. Patrols building and parking lot premises; assists in monitoring hallways, grounds and other assigned school and adjacent areas; submits security schedule to building administrators.

    2. Responds to emergencies and other security concerns; reports and detains unauthorized persons in accordance with established District/school procedures; contacts police or fire department when necessary.

    3. Patrols adjacent streets to school campuses, identifying and transporting truant students to assigned campuses.

    4. Reports and assists in the investigation of felony and misdemeanor crimes, such as theft, property damage, assaults, vandalism, trespassing, and other related disturbances on District property; conducts crime prevention and Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design security surveys.

    5. Initiates investigative reports; gathers data on misdemeanors and prepares related documentation; refers cases to appropriate authorities, as directed; refers cases to appropriate authorities as directed.

    6. Meets with the Director of Safety & Security on a regular basis to ensure the proper goals are being communicated and understood.

    7. Assists in maintaining a positive liaison with students, parents, District staff and youth serving agencies; promotes prescribed standards of conduct and behavior; meets periodically with community residents and businesses to discuss school-related safety concerns and possible solutions.

    8. Assists and advises staff and students in proper safety procedures, including classroom presentations (e.g., methods to prevent locker and classroom theft).

    9. Maintains all training related to safety in schools including student behavioral needs.

    10. Picks up, transports, and deposits District monies as directed by the supervisor or designee.

    11. Attends building staff meetings and various school-related events; discusses problems and makes recommendations; participates in student conferences as directed.

    OTHER JOB DUTIES

    1. Attends authorized training sessions sponsored by the District’s Security Office or other law enforcement agencies.

    2. Performs related duties as assigned, on a temporary basis.

    3. Regular, reliable, predictable attendance or physical presence is an essential job requirement and critical to the performance of the work.

    CONDITIONS

    Required to deal with sensitive and difficult situations, and distraught and violent people; may be required to work extended hours beyond the regularly scheduled school day; may be required to work outdoors in inclement weather; may be required to lift and carry up to 20 pounds, bend, squat, stoop, kneel, crouch, walk, twist, climb, and/or be mobile.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Education and Experience

    High school graduation or equivalent, Associate degree or two years of college in criminal justice, police administration, or related field, preferred; three years of increasingly responsible experience in law enforcement or closely related security work with public agencies, youth, and/or impaired adults; or any combination of experience and training which provides the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and ability required to perform the work.

    Licenses/Special Requirements

    Valid Washington State driver’s license with access to personal transportation.

    Valid CPR and first aid card or required to obtain within first 30 days of employment.

    Fingerprints and successful WSP and FBI background clearance/sexual misconduct clearance.

    Allowable Substitution

    Alternative combinations of education and experience may be evaluated by the Human Resources Department for comparability. Human Resources may consider other satisfactory experiences of current employees as a substitution for minimum qualifications.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    Knowledge of security and fire alarm systems.

    Knowledge of relevant social service agencies.

    Knowledge of grammar, spelling, and English usage.

    Knowledge of juvenile codes and WACs relating to public schools is desirable.

    Skill in obtaining, clarifying, and exchanging information.

    Skill in collaboration with numerous stakeholders is critical to the success of the position.

    Skill in resolving complex problems.

    Skill in helping to maintain a safe learning environment.

    Ability to work with disruptive students.

    Ability to make appropriate referrals to school support services staff.

    Ability to maintain open communications with a positive attitude.

    Ability to respond calmly in dangerous or potential crisis situations.

    Ability to delay individuals who are a threat to others, to themselves, and/or to District

    property.

    Ability to operate communication equipment.

    Ability to learn and complete training programs.

    Ability to run several blocks, climb up to eight flights of stairs, and physically defend self and others.

    Ability to demonstrate reasonable, reliable, and regular attendance.

    Ability to display a consistently positive, cooperative, self-motivated, courteous, and professional

    attitude.

    Ability to work well as part of a team and exhibit the utmost collegiality to ensure each and every day

    is successful.

    Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of people in a multi-

    cultural, diverse socio-economic setting.
