    JOB SUMMARY

    The Backflow Prevention Inspector is responsible for protecting the potable and non-potable water supply and on-site plumbing of customers by inspecting the installation of backflow assemblies, performing cross connection control testing, conducting water use surveys, and dyetesting operations. Maintains compliance with the National Plumbing Code, Texas Administrative Code and the American Water WorksAssociation rules.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
    • Investigates customerwater usage and performs water use surveys, cross connection testing, and dye testing operations to validate the requirement for backflow prevention assemblies and cross connection controls.
    • Inspectsbackflow assembly installation ensuring it meets applicable plumbing codes and rules.
    • Monitors and investigates the maintenance and replacement requirements of backflow prevention assemblies through customer service visits and annual inspections.
    • Conducts meetings and site surveys with contractors, consultants, developers, owners, and staff to resolve potential cross-connection issues.
    • Creates and maintains customer information files including equipment and inspection data.
    • Reads, reviews, and interprets construction plans, blueprints, as-built drawings, and block maps.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.


    DECISION MAKING

    • The Backflow Inspector works under general supervision.


    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
    • High School Diploma or GED.
    • Four years’ progressive experience in a water utility or related agency in any of the following or closely related areas:
      • Operating or maintaining a public drinking water system.
      • Installing or repairing residential, commercial, or industrial drinking water treatment equipment.
      • Installing or repairing lawn irrigation systems.
      • Installing or servicing fire suppression sprinkler systems and lines.
    • TCEQ Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester (BPAT) License and a TCEQ Customer Service Inspector (CSI) License or must obtain within 12 months of hire.
    • Valid Class “C” Texas Driver's License.
    • Ability to report to work on time, maintain a good attendance record, and work all designated work schedules.

    • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external customers, contractors, engineering consultants, and governmental agencies.
    • Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.
    • Skill in the use of word processing, office suite software, spreadsheet, database, and presentation software.

    Physical requirements include lifting up to 50 pounds occasionally. Subject to standing, sitting, walking, climbing, bending, crawling, squatting, kneeling and working in cramped and strained positions for long periods of time to perform job scope.

    Working conditions are primarily outside with frequent exposure to inclement weather; wastewater; mechanical, electrical, chemical and confined space hazards; offensive fumes; excessive noise; heavy traffic; deep excavations; and animals, snakes and poisonous insects. Also operates a company vehicle on a daily basis.

    May be required to work hours other than regular schedule.
