Since that time, GSD has evolved into a full service, client-centered department that provides a comprehensive suite of services to over 300 facilities: representing 7.7 million square feet of occupied space. As a full-service department, GSD assists its clients in identifying the appropriate real estate solution and then provides design and construction services for the development of the facility. Once the facility is ready for occupation, GSD provides energy, property and security management services to ensure the lights come on and the facility is clean, well-maintained and secure. To further enhance the operation of its facilities, GSD established the Sustainable Growth division. This division is responsible for implementing green and sustainable property and energy management solutions with the intent of reducing operating costs and improving client satisfaction. DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS The General Services Department is seeking Painters to perform general painting, restoration & refinishing techniques to reduce replacement costs and enhance the life of equipment, furnishings, and facilities. The duties for this position include but are not limited to:
Reviews and implements work orders and assignments:
- Receive and complete work orders, identifying and addressing necessary repairs on buildings, grounds, and equipment through established inspection procedures.
- Maintain accurate records of materials and labor used, oversee inventory of tools, and assist with inventory control of materials and equipment
Identifies, prepares and obtains required materials, supplies and equipment to complete assignments:
- Select premixed paints or mix required portions of pigment, oil, and thinning and drying substances to prepare paint to match specified colors.
- Performs general painting, restoration and refinishing techniques, e.g., spray and brush painting, varnishing, priming, scraping, floating and taping
- Paint surfaces using brushes, spray guns, paint rollers, or other methods to achieve required effects, and stain, seal, and varnish wood surfaces
Repairs damaged surfaces:
- Prepare surfaces for painting by sanding, removing old paint, filling holes, cracks, and joints with appropriate filler, taping, floating, and texturing walls and ceilings
Mixes and blends paint to match colors.
Uses a variety of hand and power tools:
- Erect scaffolding, set up ladders, or use hoists to perform tasks above ground level
- Operate tools and equipment according to established safety procedures
Maintains a safe and clean work area:
- Inspect jobs upon completion and ensure areas are clean and excess materials are removed as needed
- Perform preventive maintenance on tools and equipment and ensure that equipment is in safe operating condition
- Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting and climbing
- Correct unsafe conditions in work area and promptly report any conditions that are not immediately correctable to supervisor
- Follow established procedures for locking, checking, and safeguarding facilities
Will perform all duties assigned:
- Attend training classes and seminars as directed
WORKING CONDITIONS The position involves considerable physical exertion, such as regular climbing of ladders, lifting of heavy objects (up to 80 pounds) on a highly frequent basis and/or assuming awkward positions for long periods of time.
Posture: Frequent standing, kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting
Motion: Frequent walking, bending, climbing stairs/ladders/scaffolding, grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension, and overhead reaching; frequent driving
There are routine exposures to significant levels of heat, cold, moisture and air pollution. The position may involve periodic exposure to chemical substances and physical trauma of a minor nature such as cuts, bruises and minor burns.
Environment: Work outside and inside, on slippery or uneven walking surfaces; frequent exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures and excessive humidity and dampness, dust, fumes, smoke, gas, toxic chemicals and materials, solvents, grease, oil; noise, vibration, and electrical hazards; work around machinery with moving parts, moving.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS Ability to read, write, add, subtract and follow oral and/or basic written instructions as might normally be acquired through nine to eleven years of formal schooling. No special knowledge of any subject area or technical field is required.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS Two years of experience as a painter are required.
LICENSE REQUIREMENTS Must have a valid Texas driver's license and compliance with the City of Houston's policy on driving.
May require a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with an "H" endorsement for transporting hazardous material
PREFERENCESPreference will be given to applicants with the following skills, knowledge, and/or experience:• Effective written and audible comprehension and communication skills
• Ability to read and understand written and/ or verbal instructions
• Ability to read blueprints and diagrams
• Knowledge of equipment, materials, methods, practices, and tools used in the painting trade
• Knowledge of basic construction and routine maintenance and repair procedures
• General knowledge of other crafts used in building repair and maintenance
• Knowledge of state and local building codes
• Ability to work independently
• Effective organizational and interpersonal skills
