    This recruitment will establish an employment list to fill current and any future vacancies within the Tulare County Fire Department. The anticipated life of the employment list is six months.     Current vacancy is with the Tulare County Fire Department located in various locations throughout Tulare County. The anticipated life of the list is six months.

    Applications will be reviewed by Tulare County Human Resources & Development. As extra help positions become available, County departments with the job openings select the most qualified and appropriate applicant for the position available. The number of hours and duration of employment varies by each assignment. Extra help employees may work in a variety of County departments in locations throughout the geographic county area.

    Extra help employees may not work more than 1,559 hours in any fiscal year from July to June. An extra help employee who mistakenly works in excess of 1,559 hours in a fiscal year does not become a probationary or regular employee. Applications will be active for six months. If you are hired for extra help and you complete a work assignment and then you if you wish to be employed again, you must resubmit an Extra Help application online.     Typical Duties

    • Supervise Crew Members on an assigned shift.
    • Direct firefighting crew in the suppression of wildland fires and other emergency responses.
    • Be a contributing rater on performance appraisals.
    • Plan and assign work.
    • Provide instructions and training to subordinate personnel.

    Minimum Qualifications

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Minimum qualifications are used as a guide for establishing the education, training, experience, special skills and/or license which are required and equivalent to the following.

    Education:

    • Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12 th ) grade.


    Experience:

    • Two (2) years of experience as a full-time career Firefighter or Fire Apparatus Engineer (or equivalent) with a land management agency or a full-time department where essential functions including hazardous fuels and three mitigation have been demonstrated.


    Knowledge of:
    • Principles, practices and procedures of firefighting and prevention including overhaul and salvage for structural, aircraft, wildland, and other types of fires.
    • Operations, capabilities, and effectiveness of equipment including extinguishing agents, vehicles, pumping apparatus, and chainsaws.
    • Safety practices, fire hazards, combustibles, and potentially dangerous situations as they relate to fire prevention, fire suppression, and other emergency situations.
    • Principles and techniques of supervision related to direction, control, and evaluation of subordinates.
    • Principles and practices of instructing and training subordinates.


    Skill/Ability to :
    • Supervise and train subordinate personnel engaged in fire prevention, suppression, rescue, and salvage work.
    • Analyze fire and other emergency situations accurately and take effective action.
    • Read, understand, interpret, and apply departmental policies, rules, laws, and ordinances pertaining to fire suppression and prevention work.
    • Prepare and deliver clear and concise oral presentations.
    • Establish and maintain harmonious and effective working relationships with superiors, subordinates, and other employees in emergency and non-emergency situations.
    • Maintain fitness to perform the position function.


    License or Certificate

    • Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid California driver's license.


    DESIRABLE EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

    License or Certificate:
    • I-300-Intermediate ICS
    • IS-800 B-National Response Framework, an Introduction
    • S-212 and possession of intermediate faller card from previous or current employer
    • S-215 or Fire Command IC or Company Officer 2E-Wildland Incident Operations
    • S-230-Single Resource Boss
    • S-290-Intermediate Wildland Fire Behavior (online course is valid for this process)
    • AHA or ARC Professional Rescuer CPR and First Aid
    • (Applicants may be qualified to open a Crew Boss (CRWB) task book)


    Additional Information

    Conditions of Employment:
    Candidates selected will be required to pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol screening. Additionally, a background investigation may also be conducted, which may include a re-investigation every 10 years for some positions. An Employment Eligibility Verification using E-Verify may be required on the first day of employment for some positions. Some job classes may also require a physical exam.
