    Under nominal direction, this position manages the daily operations and supervises staff of an Austin Public Library branch.

    Job Description:

    Purpose:

    Under nominal direction, this position manages the daily operations and supervises staff of an Austin Public Library branch.

    Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:

    Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
    • Provides customer service by staffing public service desk, checking materials in and out, pulling holds, re-shelving items, assisting with customer technology questions, explaining policies, and creating displays.
    • Ensures excellent internal and external customer service.
    • Creates and implements programs, including outreach engagement, based on community needs and City and department's strategic priorities.
    • Coaches, mentors, and provides feedback to staff.
    • Responds to customer inquiries and requests for information in-person, by phone or online, and refers complex inquiries and requests to professional librarians, facilities, and technical staff. Oversees cash handling and reporting. Prepares reports, collects, and monitors statistics.
    • Provides administrative support including scheduling and coordinating meeting and room reservations, responding to phone calls, distributing mail, ordering supplies, and completing cash handling, reporting, and reconciling tasks.
    • Represents the City of Austin and Austin Public Library to the public. Investigates and resolves complaints involving staff and public.
    • Works or travels to several locations and serves on library-wide committees and task forces. Coordinates with other libraries and organizations concerning resource sharing and coordination of services.
    • Engages in short- and long-rang planning for a library branch.
    • Develops work schedules and monitors time sheets and payroll for staff. Oversees maintenance, security, and physical attributes of facility, grounds, and equipment.


    Responsibilities - Supervisor and/or Leadership Exercised:

    Responsible for the full range of supervisory activities, including selection, training, evaluation, counseling, and recommendation for dismissal.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
    • Knowledge of books, electronic databases, internet resources, bibliographic sources, reference materials, circulation software, and library automation systems.
    • Knowledge of library procedures, systems, and techniques.
    • Knowledge of equity, diversity, and inclusion principles and practices in libraries.
    • Knowledge of Federal, State, and Local laws.
    • Knowledge of City practices, policies, and procedures.
    • Knowledge of fiscal planning and budget preparation.
    • Knowledge of supervisory and managerial techniques and methods.
    • Skill in oral and written communication.
    • Skill in handling multiple tasks and prioritizing.
    • Skill in using computers and related software, including Microsoft Office products.
    • Skill in data analysis and problem solving.
    • Skill in planning and organizing.
    • Ability to plan and present effective programs.
    • Ability to facilitate discussions and resolve issues.
    • Ability to work with frequent interruptions and changes in priorities.
    • Ability to use library automation and the internet.
    • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with other City employees and the public.
    • Ability to provide high-level customer service.
    • Ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds.


    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
    • Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in a related field, plus four (4) years of relevant experience, including one (1) year of experience in a lead or supervisory capacity.

    OR
    • Graduation with a Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in a related field, plus two (2) years of relevant experience, including one (1) year of experience which was in a lead or supervisory capacity.


    Licenses and Certifications Required:

    Valid Texas Class C Driver License.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
    • Customer Service: Demonstrated experience delivering excellent customer service, including assisting with escalated concerns and supporting a positive user experience. Comfortable making informed decisions within established guidelines and consistently prioritizing patron satisfaction.
    • Problem Solving: Proven ability to identify, analyze, and resolve issues effectively. Demonstrates initiative, sound judgment, and critical thinking in day-to-day operations and in support of departmental goals.
    • Team Support & Leadership: Experience in supporting supervisory functions such as training, mentoring, scheduling, and providing feedback to staff. Demonstrated ability to foster a collaborative team environment and contribute to staff development under the guidance of upper leadership.
    • Resource Management: Demonstrated experience supporting the management of resources, including assisting with collection evaluation, content review, and removal, and organization to ensure materials remain current, diverse, and responsive to community interests and needs.
    • Diversity and Equity: Demonstrated commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in services, programs, and workplace culture. Actively contributes to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for all patrons and staff.
    • Ability to travel to more than one work location.

    The Library Assistant Manager supports the daily operations of a library branch within the Austin Public Library system. This role assists the Library Manager in supervising staff, delivering excellent customer service, and implementing programs and services that reflect the needs of the community. The Assistant Manager helps coordinate branch activities, supports collection development, and ensures a welcoming, inclusive environment for all patrons. This position plays a vital role in advancing the Library’s mission, vision, and strategic goals.

    Salary Range:

    $ 62,280 to $77,850 annually

    Hours:

    Shift Work - Full Time/40 hours a week
    • Hours and shifts may vary to include weekends, holidays, and extended shifts.
    • Hours subject to change based upon Library needs.

    Note: Hours and schedule may vary based on operational or business needs; evenings and weekends may be required.

    Driving Requirements:
    • This position requires a Valid Texas Class C Driver’s License or the ability to acquire one by your hire date. External New Hires must meet the City of Austin’s Driver Record Evaluation (DRE) requisite . To be considered for a driving position, applicants cannot have more than three moving violations or a total of six Driver Record Evaluation points within a period of thirty-six (36) months.

    City Government
