    ABOUT THE POSITION

    The FIRE Foundry Firefighter Paramedic Trainee responds to fire alarms, emergency medical calls, and other emergency situations with the goal of developing full proficiency in fire suppression and emergency medical services, including Advanced Life Support (ALS) care as a licensed paramedic. This is a trainee-level position designed to prepare candidates for advancement to Firefighter Paramedic through a structured development program.

    Trainees perform all duties of a firefighter while gaining field experience as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), completing paramedic prerequisites, and progressing through a department-sponsored paramedic training program.

    FIRE Foundry Firefighter Paramedic Trainees are expected to:
    • Gain required hands-on experience providing patient care at the EMT level.
    • Complete all required prerequisites for an approved paramedic school.
    • Participate in a department-sponsored paramedic training program, including didactic instruction, clinical rotations, and a field internship.
    • Obtain the required State of California paramedic licensure and Marin County EMS accreditation within 24 months.

    Trainees work under close supervision with increasing responsibility as training progresses. Fire Captains and training personnel provide operational oversight, while clinical supervision is guided by County EMS protocols and the department’s Medical Director. Incumbents may advance to the Firefighter Paramedic classification upon obtaining the State of California paramedic licensure, Marin County EMS accreditation, gaining experience and demonstrating proficiency which meets the qualifications of the higher level class.

    ABOUT YOU

    Our Highly Qualified Candidate will have personal and professional integrity, be highly organized, possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills, approach their work with enthusiasm, and demonstrate a strong commitment to customer service. The ideal candidate will haveprior fire service experience (e.g., volunteer, seasonal, or reserve) and wildland qualifications (e.g., FFT2, Engine Boss). In addition, the ideal candidate will havecompletedcollege-level coursework in anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, or fire science.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Knowledge of:
    • Principles and practices of fire suppression, emergency response, and rescue operations.
    • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) scope of practice and responsibilities.
    • Basic human anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology.
    • Fireground safety and communication protocols.
    • Use and maintenance of firefighting tools and equipment.

    Ability to:
    • Learn and apply paramedic-level patient care.
    • Provide safe and effective care at the EMT level.
    • Meet academic and clinical requirements for paramedic program progression.

    • Have a Cal-JAC CPAT (Candidate Physical Ability Test) card that is dated within 12 months prior to hire.

    In addition to meeting the requirements above, you must also meet Marin County’s Minimum Qualifications, Certifications, and Licenses listed below.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
    • In accordance with state legal requirements, must be at least 18 years of age by the application filing deadline.
    • High school graduation or equivalent (GED).
    • Current enrollment or ability to enroll in a paramedic program within six (6) months of hire.

    Certificates and Licenses:
    • Completion of a California State Fire Marshal approved Firefighter I Academy OR possession of a California Firefighter I Certificate.
    • Current California EMT certification which must be maintained throughout County employment.
    • Current Healthcare Provider CPR certificate issued by a training center approved by the California EMS Authority. Healthcare Provider cards issued by the American Heart Association and the American Red Cross meet the CPR requirement. Must be maintained throughout employment with the County.
    • Job classes require travel between various County and business-related locations. Employees who drive on County business to carry out job-related duties must possess a valid California driver's license for the class of vehicle driven and meet automobile insurability requirements of the County, including review of a recent DMV history. Applicants are required to furnish a recent DMV driving record when invited to an interview.     • Possession of a valid California Class C (Basic) driver’s license and a satisfactory driving history as obtained from the Department of Motor Vehicles is required.

    • Valid California Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) license

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
    This is a limited-duration, non-permanent trainee classification. Incumbents are required to complete a department-approved paramedic program, including prerequisites, within an established timeframe. Incumbents are required to work 24-hour shifts, weekends, holidays, and during adverse conditions. EMT certifications and all required licenses/certifications must be maintained throughout employment. Candidates selected are subject to background check, physical examination, and drug testing.
    Candidates selected are subject to fingerprinting by the Sheriff’s Department and must pass a California Department of Justice LiveScan, a background check, pre-employment Psychiatric Assessment, and medical prior to appointment.

    Driver’s License: Ability to drive is an essential function of this assignment. Successful candidates must possess a valid California Class C driver’s license. Submission of a satisfactory driving history obtained from the Department of Motor Vehicle within the last 6 months will be required at the selection interview.
