In this role you are initially given direct and detailed supervision and training which includes delivery of medical care within the guidelines of Emergency Medical Technician Paramedic licensure, as well as firefighting duties and responsibilities. After successful completion of training, firefighter paramedics are expected to perform the full range of emergency and rescue activities.
If you also want to be considered for the Firefighter or Fire Engineer Paramedic (Lateral) positions with the Marin County Fire Department, you must complete separate applications.
ABOUT YOUOur Highly Qualified Candidate: has experience assuming responsibility for patient care and performing advanced life support medical care and treatment at the scene of a medical emergency; performing Structural and Wildland Fire Suppression; performing rescue operations; and performing emergency medical procedures. In addition, the ideal candidate has earned an associate degree or a four-year degree at an accredited college or university and has completed college level coursework taken in fire science or a related field. Possession of a valid Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certificate is ideal. The ideal candidate for this position will have personal and professional integrity, be highly organized, possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills, approach their work with enthusiasm, and demonstrate a strong commitment to customer service.
QUALIFICATIONSKnowledge of:- State and local emergency medical technician paramedic procedures and treatment approaches.
- Medical terminology.
- Basic operation and mechanics of emergency medical response equipment.
- Fire suppression and rescue principles, practices, techniques, apparatus, and fire service hydraulics equipment.
- Principles of fire behavior, physics, chemistry of fire, mechanics of pumps and effects of weather on fire.
- Building design, construction, and material characteristics; weights, measures, and capacities.
- Ventilation, forcible entry, ladder, and hose practices and techniques.
- Related tools and equipment usage and maintenance.
- Fire control safety procedures; wildland fire control practices and principles.
- Effective teamwork techniques.

- Perform basic and advanced life support procedures.
- React quickly and calmly to emergency situations.

In addition to meeting the requirements above, you must also meet Marin County’s Minimum Qualifications, Certifications, and Licenses listed below:MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: - High school graduation OR equivalent (GED).
- In accordance with state legal requirements, must be at least 18 years of age by the application filing deadline.
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES:- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification which must be maintained throughout employment with the County.
- Firefighter I Certificate issued by the California State Fire Marshal or must have successfully completed a California State Fire Marshal approved Firefighter I Academy.
- Healthcare Provider CPR certificate issued by a training center approved by the California EMS Authority. Healthcare Provider cards issued by the American Heart Association and the American Red Cross meet the CPR requirement. Must be maintained throughout employment with the County.
- Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic license issued by the State of California, upon appointment. In addition, must possess the ability to secure Marin County EMS accreditation to practice, upon appointment. License must be maintained throughout employment.
- Job classes require travel between various County and business-related locations. Employees who drive on County business to carry out job-related duties must possess a valid California driver's license for the class of vehicle driven and meet automobile insurability requirements of the County, including review of a recent DMV history. Applicants are required to furnish a recent DMV driving record when invited to an interview. - Class B Commercial Driver's License is required within 12 months of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment.

Special Requirements: Incumbents are required to work 24-hour shifts, overtime, weekends, on call, and holidays; work at any station in the County on short notice; perform routine and repetitive work; attend meetings and classes both on and off duty; work under various adverse and hazardous conditions; wear uniform; assist in training other employees; and maintain clean and neat appearance.
Candidates selected are subject to fingerprinting by the Sheriff’s Department and must pass a California Department of Justice LiveScan, a background check, pre-employment Psychiatric Assessment, and medical prior to appointment.Driver’s License: Ability to drive is an essential function of this assignment.
