    Summary

    Under general supervision, the Parks Maintenance Worker performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled, regular and recurring tasks in parks, facility, and trail maintenance, installation, and/or repair work. This position assists with construction and remodeling projects and equipment along with department and community special events.

    Essential Functions

    Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Employees are required to be in attendance and prepared to begin work at their assigned work location on the specified days and hours. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

    • Performs maintenance work in parks, facilities, and trails that includes seasonal mowing and edging, weeding, applying pesticides, emptying trash, repairing sprinklers, water fountains, and bathroom fixtures, tree work, fertilizing, pruning, cleaning restrooms and facilities, inspecting playground equipment, managing ballfield turf and infield, painting, etc.
    • Performs daily rounds in designated parks; communicates to supervisors any work developments or needs.
    • Operates a wide variety of equipment/vehicles; uses a variety of hand tools, power tools, and pneumatic tools; operates a variety of specialized equipment such as excavators, dump trucks, woodchippers, and similar.
    • Plans and maintains grass in turf areas, prunes shrubs, maintains planter beds; assess trees for damage, hazards, and/or disease; performs tree removals; cleans up debris from storm damage.
    • Constructs, prepares, and maintains City athletic fields, including mowing, fertilizing, edging, mound construction, infield maintenance, base layout, dirt work, dragging, and lining fields.
    • Designs and installs irrigation systems; performs troubleshooting and repairs on systems; installs irrigation clocks; performs winterization of irrigation systems, drinking fountains, and outdoor kitchens.
    • Mixes and applies fertilizers and pesticides to turf areas, trees, shrubs planter beds, and around buildings as directed and authorized.
    • Assists in project work involving forming, pouring, and finishing concrete; constructs, replaces, and maintains signs; constructs installation of kiosks and fences.
    • Performs electrical work including changing outlets, replacing light ballasts, replacing/upgrading damaged light fixtures, and troubleshooting electrical systems.
    • Assists in constructing new parks and landscaped areas, as directed; sets up and cleans up parks and facilities for special events; assists in training and overseeing seasonal employees.
    • Performs related duties as assigned.


    Qualifications

    Education, Training, and Experience Guidelines
    High school diploma or GED AND three (3) years of relevant experience; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    Knowledge of:
    • Materials and equipment used in the maintenance/repair of fields, grounds, landscapes, trails, and facilities.
    • Methods and techniques of maintaining the safety of parks and playgrounds.
    • Basic plant identification.
    • Proper handling of fertilizers and pesticides.
    • Practices and procedures used in turf maintenance, irrigation, landscaping, and pest control.
    • Tools and equipment used in park and facility maintenance.
    • Relevant laws, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
    • Office practices and computer basics.

    Skill in:
    • Performing basic carpentry, plumbing, electrical, excavation, and landscape skills.
    • Operating tools and equipment safely.
    • Performing heavy manual labor for extended periods of time in all types of weather.
    • Troubleshooting maintenance problems and determining materials and supplies for repair.
    • Organizing and prioritizing tasks to meet deadlines.
    • Interacting tactfully and professionally with City staff, outside agencies, and the public.
    • Maintaining records and files on work performed.
    • Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships.
    • Communicating effectively verbally and in writing.

    LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
    • Must possess a valid Washington State driver's license.
    • Flaggers Certification is required within six (6) months of hire.
    • Pesticide Applicator’s License (Public Operator) is required within six (6) months of hire.
    • Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class B with Air Brake endorsement.
    • First Aid, CPR, and AED Certification is required within six (6) months of hire.
