I ncumbent may be required to work stand-by on rotational basis and report to work on a callback basis as needed within a designated time frame. Standby assignment is at the discretion of the Division Head.
What You’ll DoThe Utilities Mechanic performs a variety of skilled mechanical maintenance, repair, and installation duties on Ventura Water’s treatment, pumping, and distribution systems. This includes working on pumps, motors, valves, compressors, hydraulic systems, and other equipment essential to delivering quality water to the community.
Depending on experience, this team member will act in an entry-level or journey capacity, maintaining mechanical equipment related to wastewater facilities. This position will be responsible for:
- Performing preventive and corrective maintenance on mechanical equipment at wells, booster stations, treatment facilities, and reservoirs.
- Installing, maintaining, and repairing pumps, valves, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, and related components.
- Troubleshooting equipment failures, diagnosing issues, and repairing or replacing defective parts.
- Conducting equipment performance tests using gauges and meters to ensure efficiency and reliability.
- Performing fabrication and welding work to repair and modify parts or equipment.
- Performing pipefitting tasks on potable water piping systems.
- Operating motorized equipment such as cranes, hoists, and aerial lifts in a safe and efficient manner.
- Maintaining accurate maintenance logs and entering data into computerized maintenance management systems.
- Adhering to all safety procedures and regulations, including lockout/tagout and confined space requirements.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICSUtilities Mechanic I - This is the sub-journey level classification of the flexibly allocated series in which incumbents are approaching journey level. This class performs the more routine semiskilled to skilled mechanical maintenance duties, including preventative maintenance and repair on plant equipment and facilities, and may occasionally assist in routine electrical maintenance work.
Utilities Mechanic II - This is the full journey level classification in this flexibly allocated series. Employees within this class are distinguished from the Utilities Mechanic Worker I by the independent performance of the full range of skilled mechanical maintenance, repair and installation activities, and frequently assists Electrical-Mechanical Maintenance Workers in routine electrical maintenance work. This classification is distinguished from the Electrical-Mechanical Maintenance Worker by the latter's responsibility for performing the full range of skilled electrical work. Advancement to the II level is based on demonstrated proficiency in performing the full range of duties within this series and requires completion of electrical safety training and basic electrical training prior to appointment.
This position is flexibly staffed and may be filled at either level depending on the qualifications of the incumbent and the staffing needs of the City.

About Ventura Water Ventura Water provides drinking water to more than 109,000 people through approximately 32,000 water service connections. This complex water system has more than 391 miles of pipeline, 3 water treatment plants, 23 pump stations and 31 reservoirs. Our community relies on three 100% local water sources - the Ventura River, Lake Casitas, and local groundwater wells, as well as, providing reclaimed water from the Ventura Water Reclamation Facility to two municipal golf courses, the Ventura Marina area, and private customers for landscape irrigation. We maintain a full-service laboratory and monitor our water quality daily.

two years at the Utilities Mechanic I level independently performing repairs to a variety of mechanical equipment related to water and wastewater equipment and facilities and demonstrated ability to safely assist journey level electrical workers
License/CertificatesLicense and Certificate Requirements:
Wastewater : Possession of a valid California Class C driver license. Within six months of employment, the employee must obtain and, thereafter, maintain a valid California Class A driver's license with the following endorsements/restrictions: Tanker endorsements - no restrictions. According to the Department of Transportation (DOT), drug testing is required.
CWEA Mechanical Technologist Grade I Certification is highly desirable .
