    City of Claremont

    The Claremont Recreation and Human Services Department is looking for highly motivated individuals with strong work ethics to monitor activities and enforce City policies in public parks, including the 2,500-acre Claremont Hills Wilderness Park.

    The Position

    The Reserve Park Ranger is a volunteer and receives no compensation. Reserve Park Rangers are required to volunteer a minimum of 1 shift per week, but preferably 2 shifts per week, up to 20 hours per month. Hours of work are generally Monday through Sunday, 5:00 AM - 9:00 PM; Reserve Park Rangers may work City-wide Special Events, including the 4th of July Celebration events, Holiday Promenade, and Spring Celebration. Support on major holidays like New Year's and Christmas may be required.

    RESPONSIBILITIES
    • Patrolling city parks, trails, and open spaces.
    • Provide information to park users, report problems to the appropriate agency, and manage group activities in City parks.
    • Patrols urban parks and Wilderness Park.
    • Assist local law enforcement agencies with enforcing City Policies and codes at parks.
    • Inspects park facilities, and reports graffiti, vandalism and any items to be repaired.
    • Acts as Department liaison to organized sports groups.
    • Verifies park reservations and assists in the management of group activities.
    • Monitors and communicates concerns of park users.
    • Assumes duties of a disaster worker in the event of a locally declared emergency.
    • Performs related duties as assigned.


    The Volunteer Park Ranger program does not guarantee future paid employment with the City of Claremont. Its main purpose is to offer valuable experience for future professional employment.

    Ideal Candidate

    DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

    To be considered for the position, the applicants must meet the following requirements:

    • Must be at least 21 years of age.
    • Must have a GED certificate or completed the 12th grade.
    • Must have a valid California driver's license, a good driving record, and proof of auto insurance.
    • Must obtain First Aid Certification within 6 months.
    • Successful completion of PC 832 may be required within 6 months of appointment.
    • Experience in Fire Science, Forestry, Law Enforcement, or Wildlife is highly desirable.
    • Commitment of 2 days per week.
    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

    Knowledge of:
    • Parks, trails, open spaces, park facilities, general park maintenance standards, principles of public relations, customer service, and visitor management.
    • Principles of outdoor recreation, interpretation, and other different visitor services.
    • Principles of public speaking, principles and techniques of supervision and management.
    • Standard office practices and procedures, including the use of standard office equipment, record keeping, and current computer software.
    • Radio communication protocols, safe driving and cycling rules and practices, vehicle operations, basic fire suppression techniques, and basic traffic control methods.

    Ability to:
    • Learn principles and practices of natural resources conservation, park operations, and park visitor management.
    • Ability to operate a computer, calculator, telephone, portable radio, and other common office equipment.
    • Effectively enforce policies, rules, and laws; exercise good judgment, flexibility, creativity, and sensitivity in response to changing situations and needs and resolve conflicts among park/trail users.
    • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public and fellow employees, and communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing, to a variety of audiences.
    • Walk, hike, bicycle ride, and climb hills, stairs, and uneven terrain, work outdoors in all weather conditions.
    • Maintain records and prepare clear, complete, and concise reports; communicate effectively and appropriately on a two-way radio; make public presentations.
    • Work extended hours, irregular rotating shifts, alternative work schedules, holidays and weekends.
