    ABOUT THE POSITION

    Under the direction of the Ombudsman Program Unit Supervisor, the Social Service Worker I provides a variety of Ombudsman services including making routine visits to assisted living or skilled nursing facilities to provide residents or their representatives access to Ombudsman services; helping resolve problems brought forth by or on behalf of residents; providing information about resident rights, community resources, and more to residents, resident representatives, and facility staff; providing support for resident or family councils in facilities and witnessing Advance Health Care Directives for residents in skilled nursing facilities.

    The selected candidate will be required to complete 36 hours of Ombudsman Program certification training, provided by the Ombudsman Program Unit Supervisor. Additionally, they will be required to undergo a background check and fingerprinting prior to being certified by the State Ombudsman.

    This short-term term, contingent hire appointment is limited to 1,040 hours (40-hour work week) during a six-month period. An extension may be approved, depending on the project's needs within the division and funding availability.

    Our Highly Qualified Candidate

    The ideal candidate for the Ombudsman Program Social Service Worker I position has basic knowledge and experience in providing general social work practices that can be applied to providing advocacy and support for residents in licensed assisted living and skilled nursing facilities. The candidate should possess sufficient written and oral communications skills to effectively work with diverse populations including fellow Ombudsman team members, facility residents, family members and resident representatives, facility management and staff, and other internal and external partner agencies.

    The candidate should have solid computer skills and the ability to document their time providing Ombudsman services clearly, concisely, and in a timely manner using basic PDF and Word documents. Candidate shall have the ability to drive to and from facilities regularly to provide in-person Ombudsman services. A candidate with experience providing Ombudsman services or services or support for older or dependent adults is highly desirable but not required. Candidates for this position cannot have worked in a licensed facility within the Ombudsman Program’s jurisdiction for a period of one year.

    QUALIFICATIONS
    Knowledge of
    • Basic principles, practices and techniques of social work.
    • Current trends in the field of social service.
    • Principles and techniques of interviewing.
    • Methods of social work record keeping, including computer applications related to the work.
    • Community organizations and resources and the social problems calling for the use of public and private resources.
    • Basic principles of public assistance policies and programs.
    • Techniques of outreach in a targeted community or population.
    Ability to
    • Analyze client situations and social services needs in assigned area(s) of responsibility.
    • Develop, prepare and implement effective case work plans.
    • Apply applicable laws, rules, and regulations to social service operations.
    • Interpret social service programs for applicants, recipients and others.
    • Use appropriate community resources and services effectively.
    • Utilize supervision and direction effectively.
    • Prepare clear, concise and accurate case records, reports, correspondence and other written materials.
    • Maintain accurate records and files.
    • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work.
