    Major Duties

    Under general supervision, the Auto/Equipment Mechanic performs skilled work in the maintenance, diagnostics, and repair of a variety of gas and electric automobiles, equipment, and motorized carts. The incumbent is responsible for ensuring all University vehicles and equipment operate efficiently, safely, and in accordance with established policies, procedures, and regulatory standards. Work includes preventive maintenance, inspections, troubleshooting, and detailed recordkeeping, while maintaining a high level of customer service and safety awareness in daily operations.
    • Performs maintenance and repair, including preventive maintenance work on automobiles and equipment.
    • Performs minor repairs to the equipment; changes wheels and tires; installs and maintains safety devices.
    • Maintains and repairs material handling equipment, such as forklifts and pallet jacks.
    • Inspect automotive, maintenance, construction, and/or farm equipment to determine necessary corrective action.
    • Maintains vehicle inspection, maintenance, and repair records using manual and/or computerized record-keeping systems.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.

    Qualifications
    • Any combination of progressively responsible training and experience as an automotive and/or equipment mechanic that demonstrates achievement of journey-level skills equivalent to those acquired through completion of a standard apprenticeship program.
    • LICENSE: CANDIDATE MUST POSSESS A VALID CALIFORNIA DRIVER’S LICENSE.

    • ASE Certification
    • Smog Certification


    Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
    • Comprehensive knowledge of automotive and equipment systems, including electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, and fuel systems. Skilled in performing preventive maintenance, diagnostics, and both minor and major repairs on a wide variety of vehicles and powered equipment, such as forklifts, tractors, generators, and small engines. Ability to fabricate, modify, and install mechanical components and perform welding, brazing, and smog testing as required.
    • Strong ability to inspect and analyze automotive, construction, and grounds equipment to determine necessary corrective actions. Proficient in using diagnostic tools, engine analyzers, and computerized systems to identify faults, troubleshoot issues, and ensure repairs meet trade and safety standards. Demonstrated accuracy in estimating materials, labor, and repair time for maintenance tasks.
    • Ability to maintain detailed vehicle inspection, maintenance, and repair records using both manual and computerized systems. Skilled in preparing reports, tracking service schedules, and ensuring compliance with university, state, and federal regulations. Capable of managing multiple repair assignments efficiently while maintaining safe and organized work practices.
    • Strong organizational skills to maintain shop equipment, tools, and parts inventory while ensuring a clean, safe, and efficient work environment. Ability to complete time sheets, labor reports, and fuel usage records accurately. Knowledge of state and federal regulations and University vehicle policies related to preventive maintenance, safety compliance, and the proper handling of vehicles and powered equipment. Skilled in performing pick-ups, deliveries, and retrieving disabled vehicles and equipment as part of operational support duties.


    Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule
    • The university offers an excellent benefits package, including but not limited to: medical, dental, vision, retirement & savings, tuition waiver, and more.
    • Classification: Auto/Equipment / 6270 / 1
    • The anticipated HIRING RANGE: $5355 - $6528 per month, dependent upon qualifications and experience. The salary range for this classification is: $5355 - $7801 per month.
    • HOURS: Full Time; 40 hours per week; Monday through Friday.
    • This is a Regular position with a one-year probationary period.
    • The individual hired for this role will physically work on-campus in Northridge. This is not a telecommute position.
