The County of Sonoma, located in Northern California’s renowned Wine Country, is seeking its next County Executive. Spanning over 1,600 square miles and home to nearly 500,000 residents, Sonoma County blends scenic redwoods, rolling vineyards, vibrant downtowns, and a stunning coastline. The County’s nine cities, five federally recognized tribes, and unincorporated communities form a region celebrated for its innovation, sustainability, and exceptional quality of life.
Governed by a five-member Board of Supervisors, the County operates with 29 departments and a FY 2025–26 budget of $2.71 billion. Sonoma County’s 2021–2026 Strategic Plan prioritizes Climate Action and Resiliency, Healthy and Safe Communities, Racial Equity and Social Justice, Resilient Infrastructure, and Organizational Excellence.
Appointed by and reporting to the Board, the County Executive provides strategic leadership, fiscal oversight, and professional policy guidance. The Board and community seek a collaborative, inclusive, and trusted leader, someone politically astute, culturally competent, and grounded in integrity and transparency. The ideal candidate will strengthen relationships, foster organizational excellence, and ensure equitable delivery of services that enhance the lives of all who live and work in Sonoma County.
At least five years of executive-level leadership experience and at least two years of experience working with or reporting to a legislative body or policy-making board are sought. The annual salary range is $324,067–$393,902 DOQE, plus excellent benefits, including retirement under the County Employees Retirement Law of 1937.
